Bought new in 2000 (I was around 2-3 years old or so) by my father as a second car, I started it with around 90k KM, but my mom also drives the car, it is now past 120k. My dad became sick and eventually moved, and the car sat for years, and now my mom and I use it as a daily (me much more than her). The roof no longer works and was quoted as a near $3000 fix, which, even if I could afford, is not worth it when the top can only be dropped barely half of the year. (Plus, being 16 years old the car itself is not worth much more). With 170 hp from its 2.5L I6 and an LSD with RWD it’s so much fun and I love every second of it, without being too much for me too handle, or so I like to think. (Of course it’s a manual too).

The only E46 with an LSD is the M3.

You lucky SOB. I drove a 1991 Plymouth Sundance/Dodge Shadow base model that my brother and sister had first. 4 doors, FWD, 2.2L I4 with a slushbox that slipped in first gear. And this was not that long ago (class of ‘09).

I was talking to my father and I asked him if the car had an open diff, he didn’t knw what I was talking about but said it had a limited slip, idk.

Yeah my mom told my mechanic (a BMW specialist) that I was 17 and driving the car after he asked, and said I was a spoiled brat lolol (he’s actually quite nice tho), but yeah I’m really lucky that it wasn’t sold earlier.

You are correct, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Here a random E46 differential FAQ :
Is my 323/325/328/330 diff Limited Slip Differential (LSD)?
No, LSD is only offered on E46 M3s.
Can I get an LSD for my non-M3 E46?
Yes, if you go with a custom built differential. BMW doesn’t offer LSD differentials for standard E46s. One other route is to go with E46 M3 LSD. This has been reported to work when you also use M3 axles and the M3 drive shaft. (E46 M3s use 3.62 final drive ratio)

I’m not really sure to be honest but I’m not sure if he ever installed one after he bought it. It seems still that you can’t buy an E46 standard with an LSD, I’ll have to ask, I’ll get to the bottom of this.

Putting an LSD on a non-M E46 is a pretty involved and expensive job. It’s like a couple grand, easily. Honestly if your dad doesn’t even know what an open differential is, I kinda doubt he went out and decided to drop a couple grand to add an LSD to this car.

That’s what I’m thinking too, I’m going to have to ask because now I’m curious.
