I started out with a 1995 2500 Suburban, which I bought for like 7 grand when I was 14. It had 250k+ on the clock, and piles of sweet, sweet torque. I modified it with typical teenage reckless abandon and drove it until my dad totaled it when I was 17. It looked like this. Bug shield for days.

My dad felt very bad about totaling my car, so to make amends, he gave me my mom’s ‘97 528i, as well as unlimited access to his Silverado for off-roading and adventuring and such. This was a good deal for me. The BMW looked like this.

Then, still a teenager, I proceeded to modify it extensively. I drove it the rest of high school, took it to college, had many epic adventures (including 9 coast-to-coast trips), and took many good pictures, such as these.

Then I drove it all through law school until stuff started breaking (at about 220k), then sold it and wept like a little girl. I’ve had some cool stuff, but that old e39 is definitely my favorite car I’ve ever owned.

Wait, how does a 14-year-old have $7000?

I worked on commercial fishing boats every summer starting when I was like 12 and swept floors and washed cars at a BMW repair shop after school.

Last shot of the E39 is awesome. Great cars, one that really helped ignite my love for BMW’s.

Why were you buying a vehicle at 14?

Nope, we’re done with that.

Because I had money and wanted to start doing bad modifications as soon as possible.

Me too. Had zero interest in Bimmers until I started driving one.

Is it even legal for a 12 year old to work?? I had to wait until I was 14 to start at the local grocery store!

Probably not, but nobody cared, because Alaska.

I thought this scared most of the high-schoolers off:

Ha - mods just reiterated that they’d like to see these “theme” posts as comments inside one thread instead of piling up on OPPO as separate posts.

My first car? ‘86 Toyota Camry. Yeah... but it was a manual!

Yeah. I figured I threw in enough story and enough photos avoid the ‘annoying little single-photo post’ restriction

See, this is the version of Deadliest Catch I’d rather watch. Not a bunch of dudes pulling pranks on each other for the camera.

whoever got $7k for a 250k mile truck is very lucky

I did some crab stuff, but it wouldn’t have made good TV. I was on the Inside Passage in the Summer with like 2 other dudes who were both super cool, so there was no drama or inclement weather or anything. Just three dudes stuffin’ bait, droppin’ traps, winchin’ ‘em back up, then hanging out and eating crab.

Yeah. Trucks held their value well back then. I remember my limit was 10 grand and there were very few 95-99 full-sized GMs in that range.

Love the e39. Looks like you really enjoyed your. One of my favs for sure. Had an 03 540 M-Sport, so I know how ya feel. Already posted about what happened to it though so I won’t get into it.

I need to buy another e39 while there are still good ones left.

Indeed. I say go for it while there is still time left. The last year was pretty solid as far as what it had to offer, but that’s just my opinion.

I’ve been keeping my eye out for a 540 touring with a manual, and I’ve actually seen a couple come up, but just haven’t made it a priority. I’m actually working on getting another (3rd) garage built on the property, and once I have some free space, I’ll ramp up the effort a bit.

Awesome. I know you’ll post pics if ya do get one. I’m honestly not a huge fan of wagons, but that one was very nice. I imagine finding one with a manual is gonna be hard as time goes on, but hopefully it’ll be worth it. Good luck with the search!

Buy a 540 so you won’t have to take the badge off the trunk lid.
