Yes, I had one. 1997 BMW 318ti, just enough power to keep me interested but not enough to get into serious trouble.

You think the 318ti was slow? My grampa had a 316i Compact with 102 whooping hp. But that was fairly quick.

It wasnt that slow, I have a different one now that I autocross and it does fairly well with a 5 speed and LSD. But compared to my Cooper S or 325ci it isnt exactly brisk

I still love Compacts/tis. A beautiful 316i Compact in Montrealblau could have been my first car.

Dont get me wrong I absolutely adore my current ti, its just that Ive gotten to the point where the limiting factor in how fast I can drive the car at an autocross is now the engine.

The good thing is that you can easily swap an M3 engine

Very true. Sadly I would feel terrible if I swapped this particular ti as its a ‘99 with the most desirable options ever made, 5 speed, sport package and california roof but I believe my dad and I are going to look into buying a ti shell and swapping in a 2.5L M50/2. We compete with another father son duo who did the same thing with a 318is and got the power up to about 250HP which is about perfect for us.

Thank you for appreciating a very stock car. If I ever wanted to do an engine swap it would be with a car in rough condition. Never with a rare car. Keep on racing!
