Chip Foose has done some amazing work, and won huge awards with truly amazing cars.

But is it wrong if I think one of the coolest is not outlandish, not ‘million-dollar-baby’ finished, not radical, but something that looks like it would have sold directly off a Chevy lot for a reasonable price, and would be both a useful and attractive ‘Ute’ to own and drive? One could argue it is subtle, and even a little unassuming.

The Overhaulin’ builders successfully pulled off an amazing cross-generational “El Camaro” by grafting late-60’s Camaro looks, both inside and out, onto an early-80’s G-body El Camino, and having it look absolutely legitimate. Legitimate like GM should have done it that way in the first place.

Other than the taillights (and wheels), it’s pretty good. Interior is especially nice.

Pretty cool. I like the interior but the tail lights in tail gate and the pinched in front end looks wierd probably work a lot better on a earlier elcamino.

the taillights are a bit wrong, frankly I never liked them to being with but the just look out of place on the Elco. I do like the front though, and the interior is great.

With the exception of the gaudy wheels, I’ve always tended to like the cars that Chip builds. He has a real talent for integrating modern touches into a classic design in a way that doesn’t look out of place. Except for the wheels. My god, he sucks at wheels.

agreed, that front end looks like it belongs, and is SUCH an improvement.

Which is OK, considering that wheels are among the easiest things on a car to change.

Although I do have to say, the Foose/MHT F261 Fury wheel is one of my favorites for a classic resto-mod. But it is one of the less outlandish, more traditional designs, like a Mickey Thomson E/T slotted mag sort of look. And I do prefer the brushed or painted center, rather than the bling-y chrome/polished center.

Those I like, because they have the whole “we took a period-correct wheel and made it bigger” thing going on.

But seriously, Foose does good work, and the stuff he did on Overhaulin’ was often really impressive. I remember the token import episode, where he went and hand-formed sheet metal to re-shape the rear decklid. It was amazing to see, because it was a Civic or something and nobody does work like that on them.

hes also OBSESSED with over the top not factory two tone gaudy paint jobs. one time the guys wife goes he doesn’t like flames. chip looks shocked and paints subtle ghost flames inside of rally stripes. he does tons of tacky designs and is allergic to factory style restorations.
