Kinja'd!!!

So I’m probably buying a Fifth or Sixth generation Honda Civic. Keeping that in mind, I have come up with a list of mods. The ones closer to the top will be done sooner, while the ones closer to the bottom will be done later.

Tasteful wheels

Speaker upgrade

Painted valve cover

Short shifter

Lowering springs

Subtle front lip

D16Y8 swap with a Demon II running Crome

Heat shielded CAI

Throttle body, headers, and a mild muffler.

What does Oppo think?

It already is the same as the car per year. These mods would be over time, so insurance wouldn’t completely screw me over. Such is the reality of being a young car enthusiast.

B-series swap instead of D16Y8. A B20z/B20z2 or B18B1 can be had for cheap these days and paired with a GSR transmission can be a fun combo. It’s not as drop in as the D16 but still a relatively easy swap. If you really want the vtec, ls/vtec and b20vtec motors can be built.

A CX here on full comprehensive coverage is $2400 a year for a 17 year old. Not too bad, sadly.

Sounds good but an alarm should totally be on the list. Old Hondas are massive targets.

You only have to tell them if you have “significantly altered” the vehicle.

I’m thinking an alarm, the club, and a manual transmission might do the trick.

by the time you’re done with it it’ll be making a solid 165-170hp.

so why just not save up for an MK5 GTI, tune it, and have a 260hp car that's cheaper to insure?

WOW the most Ive ever paid for insurence is 130/month, but I had three tickets in the last year, on of which was for street racing, and a loan on the car. The car was a red 2 door 2001 Civic.

Currently my wife and I are paying less than 70/month on her 2010 Honda Fit, and My 91 Galant VR-4 with a loan on the Fit.

The first two yes, the last is actually a theft encouragement, if anything. Wire up a kill switch and take the ECU if you can.

If you want cheap tasteful wheels, go for other 4x100 Honda products. You can score a complete set of Integra GS-R wheels for $200 USD.

Also, why are you running the D16Y8 swap with Crome instead of Hondata? Not questioning, just wondering. Also, consider doing a B-series swap but check that your region allows B20 swaps into cars. California, for instance, won’t allow you to do that since the CR-V is technically a “light truck”.

Another interior mod you might want to try out: Recaro Type-R seats. Don’t go for reps, save up for the real thing. You don’t have to splurge like Kat Callahan and go for the DC5 ones, but you can probably find some DC2/EK9 models for a few hundred bucks and they bolt right in. I hated my GS-R’s insufficient bolstering under hard cornering and those had more support than the Civic of the same generation.

I’m thinking about putting on the wheels from an 04-05 EX.

Hondata appears to require OBDI backdating. Plus, I like supporting the little guy and Crome is an intuitive, stable platform for tuning.

A B20 swap would be interesting, I’ll have to read more about them.

Decent seats will be put in after the lowering of springs. I know where to get used BRIDEs and Recaros for a reasonable price, so we'll see.

choice of car is excellent, but I think you’ve got your order of mods wrong. Wheels and suspension completely transform the car. I’ve owned a few 6th gens, one completely modified, a few just with wheels and suspension. Even with the stock engine a stiffer suspension makes for an entirely delightful car to throw around.
