There’s a new Fiat 124 and there’s been widespread approval.
Except that it’s not a Fiat or a 124. It’s a Mazda with a Fiat engine and body panels.
It wasn’t always like this and there was a time when there really was a 124. There was a time when Fiat made coupé and spider variations of their cars. There was even a time when independent coachbuilders would build their own variations on a Fiat theme. Let’s explore, then, in decreasing order of goodness, the 124 coupés (which were more varied than the spider).
124 Moretti. Moretti began as a proper car maker and by the time of their demise in 1989 were selling tarted up Unos. A few thousand of these were made.
124 CB, the second of the factory models. It had twin headlights. Twin headlights are always better. This one made it to South Australia where it got a somewhat unfortunate tarting up.
124 CA,the first of the factory models.
124 CC, the end of the line. Twin headlights but too much tarting up.
124 Vignale. Vignale began as a coachbuilder and the name has now been bought by Ford who intend to do to them what they did to Ghia, starting with a famous Italian name and ending as a meaningless badge stuck on the side of a Fiesta.

I’ve said it before, looks like I’ll say it again. My brother had an old 124. It looks great, and you had plenty of time to look at it because it very rarely was able to move under it’s own power. I Love Fiat, i have a Fiat, but I’m not going to kid myself or anyone else about how they used to be. I think this new one is just as much a reflection of our timesas the old one was if it’s time. Let;s just sit back and be happy that it exists at all and hope that there will soon be an Abarth version avaiable.
