I have the good fortune to have a friend, Dave, who organizes a track day every few months. Last week, I was invited to join in the fun.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It was an eclectic crowd. We were divided into groups based on our car’s ability and our experience. My car is zippy, but this was to be my first time on a real track (carting excepted), so I was placed in the slow group with the other inexperienced guys, all driving (relatively) slow cars.

The slow group consisted of a Dodge Charger R/T, a Hyundai Genesis Coupe (turbo 4), my WRX, and a Crown Vic currently undergoing a transformation into a Lemons car.

The intermediate group (in speed, not experience) had an NC Miata, a Porsche Cayman, an NB Miata set up for spec racing, and a Prelude.

The fast group had a BOSS 302 Mustang, a Porsche 911 (?), and a new Corvette Stingray.

The track we drove is Circuit Grand Bayou. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but it is relatively flat with plenty of space, minimizing the risk of hitting a wall. There was an issue with opening the gate that separates the drag strip from the road course, so we had to use a secondary access point. It slowed us down a bit, but this being my first time on the track, it didn’t bother me at all.

Before we hit the track, I was the designated chauffeur. Dave and I drove the other new guys around the track so they could get a feel for the layout and he could point out the line. This really helped when it came time to drive at speed.

So, what was it like to drive on the track for the first time? Well, it was a struggle. This was the first time I had ever really pushed myself and my car to test the limits of our capabilities. I learned that I have a lot to learn. More about that in my next post. In the meantime, enjoy a few pictures.

The slow group (in the order we lined up):

Lemons Crown Vic (screencap from his video). This car has since lost its interior, glass, and trunk lid.

A Cayman

and a Prelude (I didn’t take a pic of his car, but it was the same vintage and color as this one)

The final group was the big boys. Corvette Stingray, Boss 302 Mustang, and a Porsche of the 911 variety.

An 08 R/T was the first car I ever really got scared driving. I’d never had that kind of power, or RWD at all. I almost stuffed it into a ditch. Which would have really bad since it was a used car for sale at the dealership I worked at, at the time. The test drives i got to take was easily the best thing about being a car salesmen.

Both my buddy and I were shocked that my little turbo four was in the same league as his big v-8. I do think his sounds better. He added a borla exhaust to get that deeper growl. He was talking about getting a corvette. I’m pretty sure that our track day pushed him over the edge. He wasn't happy, especially since a pressure line blew on his power steering during his second run.
