So I’m checking in on the happy little snow storm that has blessed my local ski resort, and pull up the DOT webcams for the pass. Behold, a sign from the snow gods that it is indeed a slippery white wonderland out there!

I guess the words ‘traction’ ‘tires’ and ‘required’ don’t mean much to some people. Either that or US driver education is seriously lacking in low traction training... but that would make no sense!

I grew up in the Tahoe side of northern California. We got snow. Lots. You want to know exactly how much of my Driver's Ed was geared toward low traction driving? 0%. That's right. Not a single mention of it. The only reason I am good at driving in the snow/ice is the fact that I did it. And I slowed down. And I still slow down every time. It's not hard but what people don't seem to remember is that you cannot drive your normal speeds on ice and expect to stay going in the direction you intend. It just doesn't work. A further three years in Alaska confirmed that for me. It's crazy how Alaskan's don't know how to drive in low traction conditions.

Every time I head up to go snowboarding or just to cross the pass, it’s not even the conditions that scare me. It’s the people who don’t know how to deal with them who I have to share the road with.

Ugh, I used to have to drive to Cle Elum a few times in the winter.

Right?!? When driving in Alaska, if it was snowing, I'd have to constantly reassure my wife that I know what I'm doing and we'll be fine to drive. She would always respond with "I'm not worried about you, I'm worried about everyone else on the road.". Sadly, She wasn't wrong. Something I'll never get out of my head is a car overturned in the middle of an intersection on fire (no one was hurt too badly thank God) in a freaking blizzard. Blizzard conditions and this car is melting the snow and ice on the ground within a 5 foot radius. Insane.

The Coquihala in BC was closed today due to two accidents. Sheets of ice and snow

Do you work at a ski hill? That’s the only explanation for “snowmaking” I can come up with

Teach that poor person about car control, please.

Here at snoqualmie, the temperature hovers around 32F all season. They have snowmakers but I’ve only seen them in use once—because if it’s not snowing it’s either sunny and above freezing, or rainy and above freezing. Funny enough, water only freezes when it’s below freezing.

Oh boy, that must be a fun commute. It’s one thing to dealing with those conditions for the fun, but if it’s just part of getting where you’re going it’s different story.

I always feel so sorry for the poor truckers chaining up 18 wheelers in the driving snow.

I work in the call center of a clothing retailer.

I also work at a ski hill.
