Kinja'd!!!

Today, I found out for the last 3 months, all my direct deposit paychecks are going to to some unknown bank account. I’ve been talking to various coworkers to handle damage control. More after the break.

I gave my account/routing numbers to my manager, and it was really weird at start (ironically I worked at the same company, but 6 months before). They gave me some company debit card (which strangely I insisted I want direct deposit, NOT the BS debit card option). I then just didn’t start giving a shit about what was going in (my plan was to save up for a set of Corbeau racing seats and 6 point harness). Then I realized my card was bouncing at times. I alluded it possibly me overspending-but I was making more than what I was spending. I used cash afterwards. I should have realized earlier.

This month, I started actually being aware of expenses/etc. I had spent 200 ish dollars on a laptop which said funds derived from the first (physical) paycheck. After that, there was literally barely any left. I was to have direct deposit every 2 weeks. I verified with my coworkers what date and I received my last statement. No money deposited.

I got connected to the online payroll thing. I realized I was out around 700+ dollars I had made during my time at this workplace. I start doing damage control. I start verifying things and nothing is right. I look at the pay stubs. Different account number from mine. No wonder I haven’t been getting my money.

I’m calling human resources tomorrow. Hope to christ it isn’t an intentional error but a accidental error where I can recover about 3 month’s earnings back. I’m applying to other places. Know of any bike shops or any retail that are hiring in the Bay Area?

I've never trusted online banking. I had a mental image of what I was making. I have college apps to deal with. Honestly, I was saving for a set of racing seats, so I just didnt check. Mind you I also live with my parents...

While I do hope you get the problem resolved, but it’s also sort of mind boggling that somebody wouldn’t check their balances every once in a while. Do they offer you an actual paycheck, or will they only pay using direct deposit or e-checks?

If you’re 18, you can make some cash working one of those on-demand app gigs. I did a brief stint with The People Square Bought and you can make some pretty decent money on the side doing weekend meal deliveries, but it’ll be kinda hellish on you and your car.

I'm trying to find a ride share place that would allow someone under 21 but 18....give a month I can start doing deliveries on a bike...

Sounds like you should probably start at least checking your online banking.

Personally, I didn’t even use direct deposit when I worked for Jaguar. It was much easier to deal with a physical check handed to me every Thursday.

It’ll be a pain, but it’ll get sorted. You’re going to have to involve the bank it went to and HR. You have to stay on top off it, because it’s a big pain to get corrected...no one at any of those two places gives two shits about your 700 bucks so you’ll have to make talking to you a bigger hassle than just fixing the issue.

How it should go: HR issues a reverse payment order, 3rd party bank withdraws the funds from an account (this can take a while if the person spent the money), HR reissues direct deposit to the correct account. If the person has sufficient balance and doesn’t protest expect ~2 weeks to get it sorted. If the person spent it, has no balance, and protests this could be months and require going to small claims.

Learned from experience when my account number got futzed up when my company migrated their payroll system. Took about 3 weeks and I was on the phone or in someone’s office every single day. Person had spent the money and I had to get a lawyer friend to send them a note on letter head that I was going to file suit...their bank ended up overdrafting their account for 3000 bucks to get it sorted. Kinda felt sorry for the person (never found out who it actually was due to privacy rules otherwise I would have just worked it out with them if possible)...but not too sorry, you really shouldn’t spend a windfall if you’re living paycheck to paycheck.
