Here I was, cruising home on NJ-21, which if you don’t know, is like

Kinja'd!!!

From behind I hear the thrum of a powerfully modified Japanese vehicle. “Oh ho ho,” I thought, “time for some fun!” Then I checked my rearview and saw that his closing speed was on the wrong side of the fun/stupid continuum.

Maybe next time, boyracer.

Back in the day 21/McCarter was a street race road.

From what I can tell from living in Virginia, that’s called “maximum acceptable following distance” since you are able to make out a break between the van and that car’s shadow.

Obviously he was running adaptive cruise control which calculated speed for the ideal safe following distance on the fly.

No brake lights? Was that all engine braking?

I think he had a Jake brake.

It’s hard to tell, but I’m not sure the lights (or rear bumper) are even there. He may have been braking after all...

This is not good, we have sub-oppo meetup inside jokes now. No attendance exemptions for next time, the rest of you!

Oh NJ, what the van did is WAY more common than it should be!!!! I really would love a giant sign every three feet on the highway that says STAY RIGHT. Obviously the asshat flying up with the giant wing is not making the situation any better, but I have had plenty of times not even going the speed limit, and still got slowed down in the left lane by an idiot like that.

Yeah, coming back from the meet last night, plenty of left-lane hogs on the Thruway.

It makes me think that people genuinely do not consider it an issue to hang out in the left lane. That people passing them in the right lane is okay. And when people are tail gating and flashing lights at you, the guy must just be some a-hole who is in a rush (also true, but separate issue). I want to truly understand what goes on these people's minds.
