Car-related app idea

Most people know what dating apps like Tindr and Grindr are. It’s an app that, when enabled or whatever, reports your location to the app and shows other nearby users’ locations on your phone. It’s used for dating and casual hookups. What about an app like that but instead of being used dating/hookups, it was used for car enthusiasts who want to do car things (cruise, have a cameet, etc) in a town to find each other? On the local car scene Facebook page there are always “anyone having a meet/cruise?” Posts, but coordination is awful. The solution? Pull out your phone at a meet and enable location sharing in the app. People looking for a meet would pull their phone out and see a cluster of automotively-engaged users on a map and head that way for gearhead amusements and fun-ness.

Thoughts?

This is just like my idea for manual-transmission-driving gearheads that want to meet up and hang out, also called Grindr.

OK, I genuinely laughed at that

“What about an app like that but instead of being used to get homo strange...”

You know there’s also a hook up app for straight people called Tindr, right? But no... had to go and disparage the gay people who use the app as “homo strange.”

Not cool, brosky.

I think the issue is that just like human sexuality, our automotive tastes are varied and the classic MG owner may not want to meet up with the average dudebro in his STI.

Also I think you’d get in some (admittedly undeserved) legal trouble for facilitating street races and wreckless driving. I know not all enthusuiast are like this but you get enough people together enough times and dumb shit is bound to happen.

Also I have a feeling many people wouldn’t want the location of their collector sports car known to strangers.

I think, in this case, strange means having relations. Never heard the expression “getting some strange” ?

I have not, but I’m also not well versed in a lot of slang. (Probably dating myself by saying that, but I don’t care, heh). If I’ve misread it, then I apologize.

Also, maybe the car enthusiast version could be called Dragn. :P

Seconded naming it Dragn!

That is strange. So are you saying I must get it? Or did I completely miss this travesty which hath befell the English language?

I disparage anybody who uses hook up apps equally. Especially after my best friend had his life torn apart by a girl who used Tindr to take advantage of men.

Ok. That girl sounds like a world class dick, but, (other) people wanting to have NSA sex shouldn’t be judged for that because they’ve found a way to do so using technology. What people do in the privacy of their own bedrooms, and how they choose to bring that activity into their bedrooms, is their own business and not ours to judge.

Also, thanks for confirming that your intention was to be disparaging. That’s not cool, dude. Oppo has a policy against that kind of shit.

Slang. It’s the end of the language as we know it.

As a developer, it’s very possible. I have no idea how tindr or grindr did their code though. I know some apps allow you to see others nearby, so it’s very possible.

Also, android versus Apple, I think having the two talking to each other might be difficult, as they are different platforms and development on both of them would have to be done separately (android is free for the kit, Apple you have to pay a fee and use a Apple computer for coding). I’d imagine in both kits, there is a class that allows you to search for nearby devices though...

Current version of Microsoft visual studio can compile for windows, apple, and Android platforms. The cross-platform communication thing would be solved by having the data sent, encrypted, to a server that sends it to the relavent apps.

If you can get all your car buddies from the facebook onto that app, you’re good to go.

Or, alternately, get em all on a group chat (facebook or google hangouts will let you drop a pin, I’m sure Apple has a similar feature too) and then share your location.

I suspect that you could find plenty of opportunities where meat would be in the middle of a sandwich.

Can it? Havent used studio in a while, been using IntelliJ idea for the past year.

I was also wondering about the server, but I’d imagine it’ll be easier to have the code on a cloud (everything is on the cloud now). Though the whole server cloud thing I’m not exactly up-to-date on.

But, his idea is possible, it just needs to be written. Plus it's a good idea that would be useful to gearheads. Probably would be a good idea to mark legal locations to race your cars, like racetracks.

“The cloud” basically just means info/files are stored not-on-your-computer, but instead on some server farm somewhere.

That’s what I figured. But it means you don’t have to pay for the physical server, or the maintenance of it, which is nice.

Hmmm, if the code was on github, and used a git repository, there could be multiple developers working on it at one time. Like a open source project. I'm just brainstorming here.

I can certainly understand where you’re coming from. Keep in mind, though, that whatever anger you may hold for her as a result of her actions should not be directed at other individuals or groups of individuals, regardless of orientation or use of dating apps.

I’ve just heard lots of terrible things about dating apps, especially in this area. My town is known for human trafficking and illegal prostitution and such, and I feel Tindr/Grindr reflect this more than a little bit. Then again one of my good friends is engaged to a guy he met on Tindr so I suppose it’s luck of the draw, but when I was in college and using Tindr it seemed like everybody was either desperate and using it as a last resort, or using it to string along people (not that the app is any different than real life; I had a girl in high school string me along for a year, a fact she BRAGGED about to one of my ex girlfriends who then told me.) for kicks or to feed their ego.

I just don’t like humanity very much.

EDIT: of course, part of my disdain for apps like this is a “you damn kids get off my lawn with your applimucations, back in my day we had to meet people in REAL LIFE and use facial expressions and our personalities to get laid!” sort of thing. Seriously, where was this stuff four years ago when I was too awkward to even say “hello” to people I liked? Not fair.
