I went for a drive this afternoon, and found this 851 parked at a local restaurant. It was striking enough that I had to stop and take a closer look.
I’m suspicious that this example is a replica because of it’s condition and the value of a real one, but I’m not sure. I don’t know what details to look for on these. The license plate did say 35-851, but when was the last time you trusted a license plate?

I saw one this summer in the middle of Missouri.

Odds are it’s a replica. Still cool though.

It could possibly be real, though there are very nice ‘continuations’ that were made in the 70’s. They are made using similar manufacturing processes to the originals, which is very cool.

Should have yanked open the hood. When he came out bitching, tell him you are from Mecum Car Auctions and you want to offer him $X,XXX,XXX for his car.
Maybe a little less with the Chevy engine.

I would have loved to.

That’s awesome!

I just have a feeling that it’s too nice and valuable to be parked at a local diner to be a real one.

The whole replica and kit car scene from the ‘70s is an interesting topic. One that I’d love to dive into more at some point.

Also, I can’t get a feel for scale in the picture. Was it a large car?

It seemed large, but not gigantic. The 851 is only 194 inches long, however. The Impala behind it is 200 inches long (although it doesn’t seem it, probably due to the perspective of the picture).

I was at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg museum just earlier this year. Gorgeous stuff.
