How related is the V8 in the S series and RS series to the R8 V8?

Meaning is it the same block? same engine just tuned differently? or the only thing that brings them related is they are V8s?

From what I can tell, the original V8 was also used in the B7 RS 4. Otherwise, the newer S engines are 4.0 litres versus the 4.2 in the R8.

In basic terms, it’s the same engine. To use a similar example from BMW, the 235i, 435i, 535i, X3 35i, X4 35i, Z4 35i, and any other car with a “35” designation all use the same engine, with minor tuning and exhaust differences; if you drive a couple of those cars back to back, you realize quickly that throttle response and exhaust rawness are the main differences, but can give the car a very different character (the 435i is rather raucous for example, but the X4 and X3 35i hardly feel like the same engine at all, and sound much more subdued and spool differently). For the Audi V8 though, a quick Google search yielded this, which has some more precise information:

The 4.2 V8 used in the B6 and B7 S4 (4.2 V8) are completely different engines than the one used in the R8 V8, which uses the engine from the B7 RS4 (4.2 FSI V8).

The R8 V8 is basically the same as the RS engine. The B6 and B7 S engines were less technologically advanced in injection and head design. However, just to make things more confusing, the S5 engine (essentially a B8 S4 coupe, which never came in V8 in sedan form) was a detuned RS engine.
