My mom’s lease for her Hyundai Elantra (may post an Oppositelock Review of that soon) is up in may and she wants a small crossover. She’s enlisting my help so she’ll pick a car that she really likes and doesn’t think she likes.

Right now the forerunner is the Subaru Crosstrek. I told her to look at that since it is literally a car that’s raised up a little bit and she loves it.

Others she likes.

Toyota Rav4

Hyundai Tucson

Honda HR-V

Ford Escape (neighbor’s recently got a Lincoln MKC, and they love it)

Ones she probably won’t consider.

Volkswagen Tiguan

Jeep Renegade

Jeep Compass/Patriot

Nissan Juke

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

Which crossover in the class would you say is the best pick and why?

The Mazda CX-5 is a pretty nice car for the money. Quality interior, fun to drive, a bunch of safety technology, and it’s a Mazda so it’ll be pretty well put-together.

I’d personally go with a Forester XT because I’m an enthusiast and WRX engine. I’m guessing she doesn’t really care about cars, so I’d say Mazda CX-5 is the best besides the Fozzy. The HR-V is also a good choice, because the packaging is unbelievably good. I’m 6’7” and I can get into the front seat comfortably, then go sit in the rear comfortably without moving the seat. Lots of cargo room too.

TL;DR if she likes cars get an XT if not get a CX-5 or HR-V (but it really depends on what your mom is looking for in a vehicle)

Mazda CX-5 or CX-3. My aunt has a 2016 CX-5, and she absolutely loves it. The CX-3 is essentially a Mazda 3 that’s up higher and looks cooler inside and out. It’s awesome.

The RAV4 is good. My mom has a previous generation model; I hated it at first, even though I helped her pick it out (I wanted her to get an Outlander, because Mitsubishi is pitiful), but it’s a great car. The current generation is so much nicer, and it’s now much safer than it was before.

The CX-5. It has a really nice interior, plenty of power, rides pretty nicely, and is actually fun to toss around a bit.

Full disclosure: We own one, it’s my wife’s DD, but I love it.

I’ll bring that up to her, it may be a good choice especially with its fantastic fuel economy. I’ll also bring up the CX-3, since I’ve heard nothing but great reviews.

She is really just looking for something comfortable and nice looking that gets good gas mileage. In that case the Forester XT is out. She does love the idea of a Crosstrek though.

The CX-5 and HR-V are good picks too.

I think the Rav4 is a great car, its pretty much one of the best cars you can get if you just want a car. I mentioned the Outlander (and Sport) but she doesn’t think Mitsubishi is a good brand.

I see if she’ll look at it, I also think she should look at the CX-3 too.

CX-5 or CX-3. I know several people with the CX-5 and they all love it. Only one had a weird thing with a transmission sensor. I love my 3. It's been a great car so far.

Mitsubishi is really underrated to be honest. Their cars aren’t that bad, and dealers sell them at extremely low prices.

Yes, she absolutely should.

The Mazda CX-5’s my favorite in that segment.

I haven’t driven a CX-3 yet, but I’ve heard very good things. I will say it’s pretty small though. I’d probably pony up a couple more bucks for the bigger one.

I told her that! She just took one look at the Outlander Sport and she said she didn’t like it! Maybe we’ll go to a dealer, just maybe.

Our neighbors had a CX-5, they only drive Mazdas so I’m sure they’re great.

My neighbors had a CX-5 and they loved it. She’ll probably get a CX-5 since it’s the right size for her. I’ll still try to sway her towards a CX-3 since they look really cool.

If I can add, an Outback may be good too. Does she often need to carry lots of people/stuff? Because that’s makes a big difference.

Nope she doesn’t. In fact I’ve discouraged her from buying anything larger than a mid-size crossover because anything larger is just pointless and an unnecessary waste of money.

Then definitely a CX-5.

But let us know what she actually does buy!
