Dafuq? Why? What is happening here?
There was an anti-immigrant rally in my (new to me) town today. I heard them and went to take a peek. Saw two of my students among the very small crowd (70-80). Went home pretty sad, thinking that I may have moved to the wrong part of the country. Tried to find out who they were on FB (of course, they always are on FB?!?). Didn’t find anything about them. Just that there was an anti-racism rally with even more attendants just around the corner. Bookmarked them, will join next time, made me feel better. Should have paid more attention on what is going on locally.
AND NOW THIS? A shitshow. I feel sorry for all the people who lost someone they love. This is a tragedy!
I am now afraid that this will only fuel even more hatred. In Germany, we had 0 islamist attacks/violent crimes/whatever this year, but we are at 600+ racist attacks/crimes and counting. They do not stop at burning down places where refugees are supposed to stay anymore, they have moved on to places where families with children were placed, willingly putting lives at risk!
Our politicians are using the “refugee crisis” to their advantage, and to put their name in the hat to succeed Angela once she is done. I can understand that the people feel like there is no leadership and that our “political class” is fucking it up. And I have to agree. They look like rabbits in the headlight and are pouring oil into the verbal fire day by day.
Things will only go down from here! I have a sad!
To see the silver lining behind the mushroom cloud, I may have found the cause to socialise more and not only spend all my energy on my new job.

I read an article from the New York Times about the political climate in France in relation to Charlie Hebdo. This is only going to make it even more of a clusterfuck. Linkage is here for people who have the time.
Liberté, égalité, fraternité, mes amis.

It’s horrible.

Agreed. This night is horrible. But the consequences and the hate and divide between cultures is so so much worse.. Tonight was bad, but the near future and the ‘retaliations’ are going to be worse..

There has already been a swing to the right in Europe this will likely push it further. European far right (and left) are scary things.

I agree. The Netherlands, once know as a very welcoming and open country, has already become a scary enviroment because of this and this will only become much much worse now. Tonight isn’t just about tonight but about the atmosphere of years to come in western Europe.
It’s terrifying me.

It’s awful, I just don’t get it Klaus. I just don’t get it.
It’s just fuel for more hatred, I don’t know how it could have been prevented, is France not good at anti-terrorism investigation? The effects of tonight will be felt not only in France but Germany and the UK too.
I expect a rise in hate crime.

The unfortunate thing is, is that there is no correct form of action. These reffugees need somewhere to go, but at the same time given how this ISIS thing has gone down, countries shouldn't just accept everyone in. And this barely scratches the surface. Stay safe.

Agreed, I’ll even go as far as say we are part of the reason these people need shelter.
You can’t stop this without becoming a police state.
This has affected me more than I would think though as the bands playing at the Bataclan areband where I and friends would have been would this have happened here. They are bands I’ve seen live multiple times. Shit like this hits close to home.
I fear what is to come from this and the inevitable ‘retaliations’ .

You’re right, there is not a real solution to this, I can’t come up with anything. I fear for the people I know who are regular people that just happen to be Muslim, they aren’t bad people but they will be persecuted for this.

I personally know the unspoken racism as I have a Maroccan name. (The only thing vaguely muslim or Arabian about me) While it doesn’t affect me as much I fear for all the good people out there, especially those in need like the refugees for the consequences of this. All because of some extremists.
There is a video out there of the prime minister of Egypt in the 70s or 80s making jokes about radical forces saying his daughter should wear a Hijab. It’s weird how extremism can set an entire region back a 100 years.
Most of the ‘ extremist’ countries were super forward only 30 years back.

They are going to get unwarranted looks of suspicion for sure. That is just going to make things worse.

exactly, I was getting pretty tired of all of this bullshit and became politically active with the Liberal Democrats after the dismal results in the last election here in the UK, particularly over here we need a Centre based party in order to strike the right balance of not too soft as to let this happen but not to make Muslims into scapegoats.
I may only be one person but I want to do my bit to create a better and fairer society for all and things like this only strengthen my resolve.

That’s all one person can do. But if a lot of people take that stance, that’s when you can change things.

all I can do is carry on not being an asshole and keep spreading the love, hopefully one day this social friction will reduce but I don’t see it happening anytime soon.

I’m an approved candidate to stand in local elections which I may do next year, I’m no Politician but if it’s what I feel needs to be done then I will stand. I’m very young and inexperienced but sometimes you need young blood to get changes to happen politically.
There is a resurgence in the Liberal Democrats here I can only hope the rise of the right wing can be halted elsewhere in Europe too.

Do what you can, but as long as there are people there will be conflict.
