Today I heard a Ferrari 458 for the first time, and it was utterly disappointing. It sounded eerily similar to the Civic that passed by a few moments later. I know that’s probably an unpopular opinion, but I didn’t like it. So what is that car for you?
The 458’s better looking and sounding replacement.

1. Didn’t hear it obviously but a Tesla P85D. It’s a damn good-looking car and went like hell but it was like seeing one of those insanely powerful graphics cards your weirdo PC gamer friend’s always blowing his load over; yeah it’s technically impressive and I can respect the engineering that went into it but it just doesn’t do anything for me.
2. Nissan GT-R. A lot of foreign exchange kids at my school drive various modified versions and no matter what they all sound like a Shop-Vac.
edit: TheHondaBro reminded me of the time I saw an Edition 1 GT AMG whateverthehellitis. It was way too quiet and the the angled headlight made the car look ungainly and insectoid.

I rarely see exotics in person, but when I do, I’m often surprised at how small they are. The first time I saw an R8, I thought it was a TT. Publicity photos tend to show them at just the right angles to maximize their presence.

Saleen S7. That car was a borderline deity to me my entire life, and the first time I saw one I could damn near have stuffed my fist through the panel gaps.

Drive an S2000 and you will be ruined. They aren’t extremely fast but razor sharp handling. It will ruin the Miata for you, and quite a few other cars as well.

I’ve driven an RX-8 and they’ve been compared to each other. I am actually considering a RX-8 in the nearish future, because even in town where I drove it, it was a blast.

It just did nothing for me. Granted I had watched a squad of F-16’s take off earlier. That made the truck I was in shake. It was amazing. But the Ferrari just sounded meh, compared to the other exotics I’ve heard.

Porsche’s have never really excited me, though I’m sure if got a chance to drive one, my mind might be changed.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 18:42 |

Totally disagree; you should hear a 458 that’s blasting through a city. It’s epic with the echoing. Even without echo it sounds mental. It does not disappoint. Also, the 488 doesn’t sound or look anywhere near as good as the 458.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 18:50 |
|
The Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS were the best cars (and most exciting) car I have ever driven; you need to give one of those a go.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 18:52 |
|
I’m going to agree with you on the 458. When it was launched, everybody raved about its beauty, but I never saw what was so great about the design, and I still don’t. Even the Speciale version looks worse than the F430 and other predecessors in my opinion. And same goes for the sound. Most V8 Ferraris before the 458 sounded fantastic (See: F430, F355), but the 458 just sounds boring and tame, even with an aftermarket exhaust.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 18:54 |
|
It was pretty high in the rev range, and it was meh. It’s too high pitched for my liking, at least for something that sounds like a 4 cylinder. I very much agree with Chris Harris that the 488 sounds better. It’s deeper and is just much more pleasing.

First GT-R I ever saw at a track day I was doing. This was years ago when it first came out. We all crowded around to hear it fire up, and... it sounded like an Altima.

It’s definitely too quiet. Though being in the south, the goal here apparently is to have the loudest piece of crap, so everything else is kind of drowned out. Thanks for the share!

I watched a video of James May driving the 488 and it sounded a bit lifeless compared to the 458.

This.
Yes, it’s (very) fast. Yes, it has funky doors.
But it sounds like someone slapped a couple turbos on a Mustang (which makes sense since it has a 5 liter turbo V8). Don’t get me wrong, it sounds mean and all, but it just doesn’t sound like a million dollar car.

Last year, I had an opportunity that seldom comes to people in my tax bracket. I got to start and rev the hell out of a 650S. It was fun while it lasted but left me depressed because there’s no way it will ever be mine.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 19:39 |

The problem is that for a million dollars you can have a car that sounds like a truck with turbos(Venom GT), a huge vacuum(Veyron), a smaller vacuum(P1 and 918), sex(Pagani), or a cheaper Ferrari V12(TheFerrari). So you really only have two that sound decent.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 19:39 |

The new F-150 and most Ram 1500s. I don't see many GM twins without the V-8, so any full size without a rumble at idle is disappointing. As someone who drives a 5.3L older Silverado often, I'll lament the day we lose large displacement American iron.

I just heard a LaFerrari last week for the first time, in person. It was only moving at a walking pace, but it was really not a pleasing exhaust note.

Larger displacement, and Maserati actually has a composer tune the exhaust, IIRC, so it sounds completely different. It actually sounds like a V8.

We have a GMT900 with a 5.3 and I’d be completely okay if they replaced it with an Ecodiesel or Ecoboost. I for one welcome our torque filled overlords. The 6.0 in our GMT900 2500 is nice enough though.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 19:46 |

Agreed. Not a huge fan of high-pitched engine noises. I prefer a raw, guttural exhaust sound from something with 8 cylinders or less.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 19:47 |

I haven’t seen anything about a composer tuning the exhaust but Maserati/Alfa do use a crossplane crank while Ferrari uses a flat plane crank.

DMC-12. I had no idea how slow they were until right after my senior year in high school. There was one for sale near me for $9,000, low miles, super clean, maintenance record included, so I asked the guy to test drive it. Wow. So slow. SLOOOOOW. I was so disappointed. Heartbroken even. So much so that I walked away. I should have bought it, it’s worth quite a few times more now then he was asking for. It would have been a great investment. I could have quadrupled my money. But at the time, I was just a kid who had found out one of his heroes was a farce.

To me, I guess it was the Mini. I saw lots of the older style in Europe. But when the ‘new’ Mini came over here to the U.S., I sat in one, started it, then went home in tears.
It didn’t have to sound “bad” or anything. I guess I associated that heavy lawn mower sound with the ‘real’ Mini.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 19:53 |

It depends on the V10 engine. I’ve always found the Viper’s exhaust note pretty uninspiring, despite the fact it’s pretty damn impressive in just about every other respect. I describe it as sounding like the world's fastest garbage truck.
But the Lexus LF-A, on the other hand, is as close to a roadgoing Formula One engine you’re going to find, at least in terms of what it sounds like.

I love small, nimble cars. I had dreamed of a lotus elise in my garage for a long, long time. When I finally got my go in an sc, I was extremely disappointed. Bear in mind, I had a back-road experience, not track experience. But the paint was crap, the panel gap was crap, the materials were crap, the rattles were crap, it sounded decent but boomy, it didn’t start right away, the steering and pedals were better in my miata, and even I (5’8”, 150lbs) felt like a NBA player getting in and out. To this day I wanted so badly to like it, and still sometimes think if I try again I will. But for this very reason, I am scared to meet many of my other hero’s. Except I have since driven an Alfa 4c, and I think that was the car I wanted the elise to be.

My parents neighbor has a f430 as a track car and just bought a 458(italia?)... Super nice guy told me to come race with him at laguna and sonoma. He also has the new Quattroporte GTS(3.8tt).
IMO f430 has exhaust(probably straight piped) that basically shakes the house on a cold start. underload it sounds the most magical (wizard exhaust).
458 does sound boring with the exhaust valves closed, exhaust or opening the valves can fix that.
The GTS just sounds so dirty cold starting. And on the way out of our circle there’s a large hill, so all we hear is turbo spool and boooost.
My 15wrx noise/exhuast sucks because it doesn’t have unequal headers like the previous gen and STI’s, but there’s a trade off for mpg and noise. So my car just sounds like most 2.0T motors. My girlfriend asks me how my corolla is on the daily and I cry.

For me reading about the upcoming Bugatti Veyron and then seeing it - meh. I suppose the whole styling is designed to keep the car on the ground at 250 mph - $25,000 tires (at the time) all while you are in traffic on Sunset Blvd

Every S model around me has modified exhaust, I can't believe the kind of tone they're getting out of those motors. I haven't been able to drive one, but I'd be willing to test one once I'm car shopping again. I'm taking public transit for the next year so I'll need to start light once I move back to the east coast.

Lotus Europa. I know, but it looked so exotic and cool when I was 25. Inside it looked like an incompetent kit build, and the completely ordinary Renault drivetrain in the back made driving it feel like being under the hood of some secretary’s commuter ride.

I love how it looks, but it is almost impressively boring to listen to. Somehow, it sounds even blander than a lot of mainstream I4's, never mind high revving ones like older Honda engines or that 1.8L Toyota developed with Yamaha. Flatplane V8's don't really do it for me, but then again neither do most crossplane V8's. Guess I just don't like V8's so much.

Any Viper with side pipes. The coupes with the rear-exit exhaust sound good, but from the side a Viper roadster sounds like an unmuffled 5 cylinder, which it effectively is.
