So with the colder weather I guess my Mercedes battery started getting weaker, I could feel it slowly get less powerful starting. So I got an Optima like in my Z. I had to lay it down and strap it for now, there is no direct replacement. I’ll have to get something better to strap it in there. For now it’s ok. Starts strong now. The Z has triples and it starts way better with the Optima now (well it’s not running at the moment due to upgrades but it did before we decided to do all kinds of stuff to it).

I love my Optima. I didn’t pay for it though.

Back when I used to work at a parts store a guy came in yelling and cursing that the Optima he had was junk. He said he had it in his mud truck for less than a year and now it wasn’t starting his truck. The manager warrantied the battery and replaced it with a store brand lead acid one.

I went back to where the cores were kept and put it on the slow charger for a few days and tested it, turns out it was just fine. I then swapped it out for the crap lead acid one in my car. Basically as long as they have the correct number of cores to send back they don’t care what type it is.

That was three years ago and the Optima has now found its way into its third car. I even left it in a car for three weeks while I did a whole bunch of maintenance without starting the car or charging it. When I was done. I dropped the car off the jackstands and it fired right up.

I love them, they really are powerful and can be stored, don’t leak, can be mounted any way you want, a bit lighter... My Z has triple carbs and it helps to have the power for that, but this Merc is a diesel and they need a bigger battery, especially in the colder months, the space for the stock one is long. But I know this thing is much stronger, the Z fires up like crazy compared to the normal one.
