This is a series in which I’d like to highlight a special, often neglected area of car culture: (German) low-budget customized cars. Maybe they are to Germany’s traffic what the bosozoku are to Japan’s.
Maybe they are only Ricers.
But a term like that does not exist in Germany, as the cars being modified are mostly, what ‘lies around’ in a way. Older european economy cars. predominately. VW Golf 3s (so many faked VR6s...), Peugeot 20Xs, Opel Corsas...you name it.
But this is not a place to destroy the creatons and their owners but also one to look for the influences they had. Before they failed, of course.
So I thought, I’d start off with something that always is promising: A wrongful listing. Here’s a Honda Civic EG ‘Coupe’ 1.5i
It ticks ALL the boxes: A cheap bodykit, no technical mods, OEM color and STICKERS. These read ‘No thing for the king’ among others.
The front bumper and hood have been replaced with mismached spares finished in black. Sometimes, these cars are modded after accidents, when new parts have to be acquired anyways. Note the door stickers. Pretty sure these are no Recaros.
Also, these wheels are not from Enkei OR BBS, both of which are prominently featured on the doors...
So there is a Fast & Furious vibe about it, naturally, as it could quite sure have been ‘built’ in the mid 2000s. Then there is the influence of its location, featuring Recaro and BBS prominently. And it is located in a rural bavarian area, so real stance or expensive mods ain’t quite the thing. There’s no competition anyways.
These cars are a vital, if not much beloved, part of many countries car cultures and also a kind of inexpected collages that come together as shady, amateurish artworks.

I think one thing about the black hood is Spoon Honda’s often have black hoods on a other colored car. I believe that is where this started.

Good idea.
But it doesn’t look like it was built by someone knowing what a ‘spoon’ is...

The company, or the eating utensil?

Very true. And on further review the front bumpers are body colored on the Spoon cars.

I wish the seller all the luck in the world, but that mess is solidly in the €500 camp.
Anyway, I don’t seem many ‘riced’ Japanese cars any more. Maybe because there aren’t that many Hondas left (in Western Europe), nor are there more than a handful of other at least somewhat interesting Japanese cars available in the used market.

And the ones that are cannot be bought at a reasonable price anymore.
