There is something important in this picture. It’s not the odometer, nor the oil warning light as the car is off. It’s the dreaded check engine light. A warning light that was initially meant to be helpful, but is so vague, it is considered a nuisance. It can be anything from a loose gas cap to total and utter engine failure. You can then imagine the fear I had when this light came on while I was driving, and wouldn’t turn off even after I tightened up the gas cap. Clearly, something had to be done.

Yeah, it always means the gas cap is loose on mine. So the check engine light doesn’t mean “check the engine” at all. Brilliant.

I’d be more concerned about the oil light anyhow...

P0420
I hope you’re right about that O2 sensor. Unfortunately, this code often indicates that the cat is indeed bad. Replacing the sensor could be a total waste.

Black electrical tape works well.

Seriously, P0420 does NOT indicate a bad O2 sensor. It indicates a “bad cat” which could mean anything from an exhaust leak to a leaking fuel injector. (or a bad cat)
Replacing the O2 sensor will probably not get rid of this code.

Repair adice ?

I’ve done some digging around on the Sienna forums (yes, they exist) and have found that most of the time, its caused by one of the upstream O2 sensors going bad. They’re all out of tolerance, anyways, so they’ll need to be replaced.

The live data shows that the O2 sensor is simply far enough out of spec to trigger the P0420. Besides, a new cat is just another part. Not my van, not my money, not my problem.

I call that code the “I feel weird” code. That pops up when the computer is freaked out by something, Literally could be anything

Eh, our Volvos seem to throw codes all the time, always related to the exciting and complicated O2 sensor system, so we usually ignore it until it comes time to smog check...
