Two, actually.
The de-cluttering of my garage. This is my first entry in the saga of my DIY storage solutions, but more will come.
I wanted to add 2 tire racks to the garage to make room for actual cars, as it’s almost time for snow. A cursory search showed I would be out about $300 after shipping for 2 decent racks via Amazon or other online retailers. Or I could go with the cheapest thing available and get out of it for about $100, and worry about the quality of some spot welds done by the cheapest bidder.
So, I said screw it. They aren’t that heavy, I can do it with some 2x4s and hardware from Lowes.
Based on some load table reading, each should be good for at least 300 pounds, which my Odyssey wheel and tire set comes in well under, and total bill of materials was a shade under $70. All told, it was about 2 hours labor, including measuring the clearance to the opening garage door about a dozen times. The lift over height of Odysseys tires (on the right) + support arm height left about an inch, which I split more or less evenly between the garage door and the ceiling. They just squeak by.
They’ve been up a week, without budging. I can currently fit 1 car in comfortably. More cleaning needed.
Materials
(6) 2x4x8’
(4) 3’ chains
(12) lag screws plus washers
(8) eye screws
(8) ‘S’ hooks
(4) turnbuckles
(24) 3 1/2” deck screws

Even though I feel confident on the math, I’ve been watching those racks like a hawk for week. I think you’re right, they’ve made it this far, time for a beer. Probably of this variety

The wood is plenty strong enough. If you are really worried, you can rotate your front 2x4 90 degrees and run it between your two horizontal 2x4s.
They look good. Nice work.
