But I say GTS.
Edit: I should mention, I do prefer GT3’s over the GTS but after looking at prices for used 997.1/997.2 GT3’s, I don’t think I’d ever be able to spend that coin on a car, especially one I couldn’t really drive on public roads as much as I’d like.

I say RS America because I’m certifiably insane.

why
the GT3 exists

Crazy like a fox. I wish I was in a position when the market was down to buy one of these (among other air-cooled P-cars)

It’s a fine car, but I don’t like it for two reasons:
1. Most were PDK
2. Centerlock wheels. Pain in the ass with a capital P-I-T-A

I agree with you, but the distinguished gentleman who no longer uses his GT3 for various reasons might sell and pick up one of these. Really not an uncommon trend I’ve seen on rennlist.

Yup. With a manual and good old-fashioned hydraulic steering.
The 997 still looks good, but sadly it is showing its age compared to the design of the 991.

The GT3 is probably unattainable for any budget I will ever have to spend on a car, even as a chemical engineer. I’ve always wanted a GT3 but I’d like something more road friendly.

Some of us have children , Brian!
I’d be the guy who’d retrofit a back seat into a GT3, though...

I love these as well, but I’m thinking more of a budget and age sense. Out of 997’s, I’d choose a GTS, or maybe a GT3 if I didn’t need road civility. However, if all generations were considered I’d most definitely go straight to any 964. The 964 is probably my favorite gen, as well as I’ve always dreamed of getting one from my birth year (‘93)

Do manual versions command a huge premium?
I agree with you on the centerlocks, even if they look really cool. Many owners convert them to a standard setup, though.

I agree, the GTS is the best 997

I don’t think I’d have a manual post 997, h0wever 997 or older, con manuel is the only way. Something about a 7 speed gearbox along with the evolution of the PDK trans makes me think I’d rather flap a paddle than spend my time shifting. I haven’t driven a 7 speed yet so I could be off base there.

I’ve seen fewer manuals and they are priced close to the middle of the price graph.
True, I’ve heard of that. Haven’t actually seen how much it costs.

Because back seats and ground clearance!

Shhhh... Stop... Please
Don’t let out the GTS secret. I’ve been searching for a nice manual 997.2 GTS for months. 991 GTS’s are just as nice.. And depreciation seems to be my friend.

In 2008, nobody could give away RS America’s for more than $40,000. And now a good one is at least $95,000

Crazy talk. Just in 2012 I was scoffing at 996 GT3s hovering around the low $40k’s thinking they’d dip down a bit more. Now even beat examples are still in the $50-60k range.

I’m not sure how safe it really is, either...

I just know that if I had a PDK, it’d end up being left in automatic mode 90% of the time. The PDK is better in every measurable way, but I just love the engagement of driving a manual, the feeling of being one with the machine. Don’t think I’d get that pushing buttons or pulling paddles.

As much as I want to be progressive and be open to change, when it comes down to it I agree whole heartedly. I’ve only driven manual cars, and they’ve all been boring econoboxes, and the only redeeming feature they all had were that they had a stick. I think even saying now I’d have a PDK 991, when it came time to pull the trigger I’d still have to test drive both gearboxes.

Good choices are fantastic things for enthusiasts!
I hurt my back this past weekend, and was very thankful to have my old beater automatic Pathfinder to drive to work a few days...
I’ve always had a manual, too:
‘86 Camry
‘88 Acura Legend
‘91 Accord
(back in the Legend)
‘05 Mazda 3s hatch (bought new)
‘08 M3 sedan =)

I can’t think of one good reason for why one might do that other than 4wd, but even then snow tires exist

this makes no sense
you can put license plates on a GT3

I agree. Always loved the GTS models.

PDK (third pedal is difficult for some older drivers), more compliant ride. Real rear seats for tiny grandchildren. Newer platform with a warranty.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:52 |

Yes, that is true!
I was given a ride in an M3 GTS for multiple all-out laps on the Nurburgring this spring. On track, the GTS’ suspension was amazing. While the track was red flagged, my buddy I was riding with took it out on the street to drive around Nurburg and get gas. Based on that experience and that the GTS competes against the GT3 (therefore my assumption is the suspension would be similar), I don’t think I’d be able to drive a suspension setup like that on the street even if it’s legal.

You can put license plates on a group B or C car as well (Group C being registered as a kit). Doesn’t make them a good road car.

Pulling paddles is pretty damn fun though, especially when the response is faster than you can think.

I’m sure it can be. Only dual-clutch I’ve driven is a DSG-equipped A3, fwiw.
