Trying to sell a crappy car sucks.

Our Shitroen is still for sale weeks after replacing it. I’m honest so I list the faults the car has to every potential buyer which makes them realise it isn’t worth the asking price. The problem is my parents refuse to sell below the asking price... I don’t want to deceive anyone since if the car packs in they’ll probably come straight back and kick up a fuss. This is becoming a complete pain.

They wont let me come down on the price really, they're annoyed I've taken it down to where it is now. They don't seem to understand how shitty it is...

That’s the thing with parents. They say ‘well I paid that much for it so asking that much is fair’, trying to explain ‘yes but the thing is so shot to hell that it’s not cost effective at the price your asking’.

Raise the asking price somewhat, to create some room for negotiation. Or, if the faults of the car are easily/cheaply mendable, fix them.

I've tried that, the thing is beat and they way overpaid. Still they wont accept anything less than £400. I followed a few on ebay and they all went for sub £300. Most were nicer than ours...

It’s been reduced several times because I got literally 0 interest. It was listed all over the place. One fault is easily fixed (needs a new dipstick) but the others aren’t worth bothering with financially.

How much would you get for scrap?

About £40 scrap prices crashed recently.

Thanks man. Got a few viewing it at least so I might just cut the price if it'll get it gone and they can deal with it.

If you’re resigned to getting £300 for it, is there anything you could do for £100 that would make it sellable at £400?

Not really, it needs a new back box but I'm sceptical I'd get that money back in the sale.

Hmmm, tricky.

Are you selling it on their behalf or selling it and keeping the money for yourself?

Have you tried just telling them to sell it themselves without involving you if they’re so convinced of its value? Stick a “for sale” sign in the window and see what happens.

The thing is it's my money in the car (I bought their new one for them) so I want to get it gone.

List is rare or a classic. Change the font to all capital letters. Put hurry or won’t last long somewhere in the listing. That’s what everyone else does on Craig’s list or Ebay when they are trying to move a sad lump of crap.

I paid for the car replacing it so basically getting my money back. They’re paying any excess I lose, the new car cost £400 hence that being their bottom price. I put a new dipstick in for a tenner today and they complained about that...

Wait so they’ve said that they’ll pay any excess that you lose, but are refusing to let you sell the car for a loss (even though that’s all you’ll be able to get for it?).

actuallyRealistically, what would happen if you sell it for £300 and they get annoyed?

My favorite part though is getting to be a stereotypical sketchy craigslist seller (or whatever your local equivalent is). Oh the AC probably just needs a recharge, mostly highway miles, etc. Most of it is true just sounds like bullshit when you actually say it. People love hearing that shit though.

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah pretty much, they basically wanted the car to be a straight swap and are willing to let it sit for months because it isn’t them with £400 missing from their bank account...

They’d just take forever to pay me back and be a pain about it. I have to live under their roof until I get a better job so I don’t want to cause a fuss.

Yeah they always list it off. I just give basic details on the car and honest pros and cons. Maybe I should lie/ exaggerate more...

Yeah I can see that.

Still, £300 in the account and £100 at some undetermined point in the future is better than £0 in the account and £400 at some undetermined point in the future.

I say just go for it...

Well don’t lie but leaving out things (slight oil leaks, parts needing eventual replacement, and anything else minor) is perfectly fine. Buying a used car is always buying someone else's problem so it's on the buyer to figure that stuff out. Obviously major issues are worth noting but an aging radiator or nearing timing belt service time is not really your problem if it is not immediate.

I’d change the price to 300, sell it, eat the loss, tell your parents it sold for 400. It’s pretty clear that it’s not going to sell at 400, and if your main concern is your parents, just lie.

Bit late to the party, but if you have the space and time, you could break it; I ran a quick check of some major parts on eBay, and it adds up

-a 1.1 engine (presumably including gearbox) that runs is roughly £100

-wheels with decent tread are £20+

-most panels (doors, fenders etc) are £25 each; bigger stuff like the bonnet is likely more

-an interior (front and rear seats) is £50

-even smaller stuff like headlights are £25 each

-a bare shell for anything is worth £50+

If you broke and sold everything, you may even get more than your asking price, if you have room and plenty of spare time, obviously.
