After reading the reviews between both (and also noticing how far the prices are falling on some of these), the only real gripe that the auto-journalists seem to have with the Golf R over the GTI is how much more it is for what you get.
If so, then what would be a good price to make the R a more tempting offer?
I’m genuinely curious as I have only driven a base, DSG GTI on a test drive.
GTI- $25 - $34,000
R - $36-$40,000

I don’t see the big deal. Neither of these cars is worth the asking price to me. 40 grand? Come on, you can get a hell of a lot more car for that kind of cash.

what the price different for the GoRf compared to a similarly equiped GTI? the GoRf gets another 100hp and AWD. to me, thats worth at least 3G

It’s not really a $10k difference if you account for options on the GTI that are standard on the R. Leather is standard, powered driver’s seat is standard, upgraded Xenon lights are standard. It’s more in between the SE and Autobahn PP GTI’s. Which go for around $30-$31k
I have the base R and love the extra power. It really is noticeable. For the price difference between it and a PP GTI SE it was worth it to me.
The only thing VW could do to improve it is maybe give it the I5 engine from the RS3....

Can you though? Honestly what can you get with the build quality/ AWD/speed/options/hatchback space/versitility for 40k new? I’m bias ,y household has two, but that was by accident.

My S/O has had a ‘12 R for two 1/2 years, and I have a ‘15 with DSG and DCC. If you have questions let me know I can help you out. In brief though I bought mine because I drove hers over my Elise and Viper. Sure the Elise handled better and the Viper was way faster, but the little R was fast, nondescript and enough fun to compromise.

By “more” you of course mean a “larger” car, not actually “more.”

I think the base Golf R is the best bang for buck. Who needs to spend an extra ~6K on navigation, 19” wheels and adaptive dampers? Besides, those larger wheels probably negate any of the “comfort” settings you could set the dampers to in everyday driving anyways. From everything I’ve read, the base Golf R’s shocks are already stiff enough for spirited street driving without beating you up too much.

No you can’t.

I mean, if you can spring for the flagship car, i’d say go for it. I just hopped in a mk7 gti and am loving it. Plenty of power for me. I only imagine the Golf R with all the trimmings would be as fun or more so.

That was my thinking as well. I don’t need Nav because it comes with Carplay/Android Auto, bigger wheels negate most of the comfort, i don’t need parking sensors because the camera comes standard.
It really is a great bang for your buck, for not much more than an equally optioned GTI.
