Yves Rossi gets bored very easily. He started his aviation career as a fighter pilot, but found Northrup F-5s and the like far too safe and relaxing. He moved on to skydiving and wing suit BASE jumping, but again, found these pursuits to be far too tame for his liking. He wanted to fly, like a bird, not just sit in a cosy cockpit or skydive in a dress for a slightly better glide slope.

This led him to the invention that would make him famous. Mr. Rossi designed a small composite wing, bolted four little jet engines to it, strapped it to his back, and jumped out of a helicopter. The only control for his powered wing suit was a throttle, in the form of a scroll wheel on his glove. All aerodynamic control surfaces were replaced by his body—legs to control pitch, hands to control roll and yaw.

After some testing, he set out to push the boundaries of this creation. He !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and played around with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . He !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on old new Top Gear. Lately, he’s set up shop in Dubai—the kind of place that welcomes insane and expensive stunts—and most notably was given permission to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

He’s clearly still bored, because he’s also taken to playing with large aircraft. He !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! at Oshkosh Airventure, and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I think he’s the first person to be classified as an aircraft by the FAA. Most recently, he talked Emirates into letting him and his protege fly formation with the world’s largest passenger aircraft. The Airbus A380 has a wingspan more than 35 times greater than that of the Jetman wingsuit, and has four enormous turbofans producing more than 70,000 lbf of thrust each (795 times greater than the leaf blowers powering Yves’ crazy contraption).

Every heard of wake turbulence? Those powerful vortices produced by large aircraft moving through the air which knock full scale aircraft out of the air?

Kinja'd!!!

Now try to stay out of those by flexing your toes. It’s like a fruit fly drafting an 18 wheeler. Oh, and do your best to not be sucked into one of those 10ft vacuum blender furnaces under the wing.

All I can say is, Icarus has nothing on these dudes. Also, I want a goddamn jet pack.

I'm really glad he hasn't sold these to the public. He makes it look easy, but he's undoubtedly extremely talented and seems to be very safe with it. Something like this in the hands of random people could be very, very dangerous

Oh yeah, definitely. Luckily there is at least the barrier of needing a helicopter and a team of people to actually launch you.

It’s just an expert-level paraglider :)

Seriously, though, I’d love a slower, less powerful version. Instead of the delta wing, a big straight glider wing, and instead of the massive thrust, a moderate amount.

I think he’s the first person to be classified as an aircraft by the FAA

That’s it, I should clone him.
