A mouse comes in handy with Windows 3.1, however.
![]() 11/09/2015 at 21:50 |

That’s true. I really enjoyed 3.1 on the old IBM workstation my dad had for work - sadly my set of floppies with the installation package on them got lost at some point.
I was a big fan of accidentally closing out windows and ending up back at the dos prompt.

All that’s missing is loading GUEST.EXE for the Zip 100.
(at least, that’s how I do it)

Nope. No clue at all what any of that means.

3.1 was my first memory of using a computer, although I barely remember it. It was on my dad’s old 486 Gateway 2000. I still have the original 5.25” install floppies which I’ve been meaning to archive.
I always found it fun to start windows manually. “win” FTW.

I have fond childhood memories of Floppy Disc Installation Adventures
Dad would spend hundreds of dollars on a program with about 30 installation disks, only for disk # 17 to be corrupted and leave a half installed program on the computer. It was the digital Oregon Trail.

I’m still in high school. There’s no way I’d be old enough to know that.
![]() 11/09/2015 at 22:45 |

Ah, yeah that is why. I started my senior year of high school more than 7 years ago.
That makes me feel old.
MS-DOS was released in 1981 and updated until ‘94. Windows 95 came out in ‘95 and that’s probably what you might remember as a child (or Mac System 7/8

I’ve used 95. My personal favorite still has to be XP

I remember what all that means.
But I have to say... why set your last drive to F? I’d usually set it to Z.
And you forgot to load doskey and set Buffers = 20!
And no “LH win” or ansi.sys?

Like, 200 of them?!?
Reminds me of the old Sierra games, like 20 friggen disks to install!

Stop it - you’re going to give me nightmares. I spent more time in the DOS world than any sane person should have. This probably explains why I am not sane :P
Back in the days of DOS games there was always the problem of getting enough of the 640K available after loading all of the needed device drivers. Too many drivers and you didn’t have enough memory and the game wouldn’t run. I spent days trying out various combos of drivers and settings to make the ultimate free memory boot disk. Since the filenames were limited to 8.3 characters, this excellent disk was known to all as 603KBOOT for obvious reasons.
And when I got into IT I was the only one that had any working knowledge of Windows for Workgroups 3.11, so I got all of the support calls for that crap. After a month I wanted to quit and go back to tossing boxes in a warehouse, but thankfully we migrated out all of those dinosaurs.
A few years ago I wanted to run some Windows98 games without emulation, so I built up a killer system for it out of spare parts. I had forgotten how fragile that OS really was. One wrong BIOS setting and **BOOM** - constant crashes, if it booted at all. When it worked, it worked fine. But when it didn’t, well, good luck figuring it out. Thankfully back in the ‘90s we had the good sense to move from WfW directly to NT 4.0, bypassing the whole 95/98/Me experience in the corporate world.

Don’t worry Nibs, he probably still thinks they’re just save icons.
As with the senior year thing, I started mine in 2005. I can't believe it's been 10 years.

My goal was to build up a killer system to play
Grand Prix Legends
, but dammit, that game is
tough
. I have a hard enough time keeping it on the track in practice, and it only increases in difficulty in qualifying and the actual race. Even when I do complete a lap I’m several seconds behind the pack and usually drenched in sweat.
It’s like Falcon 3.0/Falcon 4 or a Boeing 377 model that I bought for FSX - highly realistic, but my gawd, the learning curve is steep. I never mastered any of those...

I was Big Man on Campus when I bought my 486 complete with a soundblaster card....
I was digging through a box the other day and found a gamepad with a gameport connector. I have nothing to plug it into anymore.

Don’t forget to save copies of autoexec.bak and config.bak in case your modifications make everything go wrong. You might need to get back to the only slightly broken versions if things go too far wrong.

I’ll never forget Dad got an old computer from work and installed Duke Nukem 3D using 13 floppies.

That brings back memories of boot disks to play Doom and when PCs had “Turbo” buttons.
