I’ve been looking at cars up to 300 miles away from home. How far away have you actually bought one? Including sale by proxy and delivery.

Personally I’ve never gone further than 40 miles, but when I was wholesaling I bought cars sight unseen from auctions in Pennsylvania to be delivered to Massachusetts dealerships. Furthest I ever did was Pittsburgh to Boston. We never had any issues with cars purchased, though one of my coworkers did get a Nissan Maxima with a really crappy respray that none of our clients wanted.

In 2008 I bought my ‘98 Z28 from a guy in Atlanta I met on LS1tech. I lived in the Memphis area at the time, which is just under 400 miles away. After many conversations, emails and photos, I booked a 55 minute flight and was on my way.
Everything about the car was as described so we did the deed. I spent a few bucks on tickets and gas, but saved 2-3k over a comparable local car. I also got a great story and road trip out of it. I always recommend broadening your search.
BTW.. Any avid Craigslisters that don’t use Searchtempest are seriously missing out.

I think I may have close to as far as possible CONUS - west palm to Seattle for an elise.

I’m in Boston and I bought a car in Pittsburgh, that’s what 600 miles or so? But my brother in law lives in Pittsburgh and he went to check it out firsthand for me, test drove it and sent lots of pictures.
FWIW it was kind of a rare vehicle - Yukon XL 2500 with the 8.1, and in good condition. Most of the ones I could find with the 8.1 were beat. This one was minty.

I’m nearly in your final category, but not quite. ~470.

Did you have it shipped?

My last two cars were 150/400 miles away.

I have picked up 2 cars from GA and driven them back to Boston. So roughly 1100 miles each time.

I rarely buy cars CLOSER than 50 miles, because I live in RI and all the cars here are junk.
I went about 100 miles for my Mustang. When I was 18 I went 300 miles for an ‘88 IROC, I bought a Saab from Georgia and had it shipped in. All good transactions, actually.

Was that for the Lincoln?

Are you including both trips?

Well, ~470 there, ~470 back, twice, so it was kind of like 800+ out, but not quite.

I bought my 97 Prelude on eBay in 2002ish, when eBay was in peak popularity, sight unseen and had it shipped from Texas to Pennsylvania. I was a stupid 16 year old. That car was a bit beat beyond it’s year and miles. I think that’s why I buy brand new cars now.

I got my Smart Fortwo two months ago from a Carmax dealer in Portland, Oregon, USA; I live in Seattle. So that’s about 180 miles, maybe more.
