I have a 2008 GMC Sierra with 4wd. I don’t use 4WD often but the other day I turned it on and tried to make a semi sharp turn (slowly) only for my truck to stop as if I hit something. Anyone know what’s up?

Why did you have 4WD on to make a turn?

Did you blow up a differential? Although everything I’m thinking wouldn’t make you stop, there gears would shear off and you just wouldn’t have 4WD. Is this one of the ones where you have to shift in to 4WD and then go lock the hubs?

My dad’s Navara does the same. Don’t make sharp turns on dry asphalt in 4WD mode and you’re fine.

If you have positrac 4WD then I'm pretty sure it locks the front diff. In short, only turn it on when you actually need it

If you try to make a sharp turn on a grippy surface with 4wd engaged the drivetrain will bind up because you don’t have a centre differential. I haven’t heard of that stopping a vehicle in motion but if the speed was very low and no throttle was applied I could see it happening. I know our ranger bucks and wobbles when you try to take a tight turn on gravel with 4wd engaged as the tires have to slip to allow the drivetrain to move.

^^^ exactly what happened. Learned this at 16 in my mitsu montero, now I like my center diff in my WRX

What everyone else said is pretty much right, but I thought I would add that the 4x4 transfer case is what causes this, because it locks the front and rear driveshafts together. Typically the front has an open differential.

My experience with 4WD (‘94 Sierra, ‘98 Taco) tells me that the wheels like some slippage when you’re in 4WD, so maybe you bound up a bit. I’d say you only get a few chances to do that and get away with it before it gets ‘spensive...
