I guess enough weight is already at the back but the targa top can’t weigh that much can it? Would too much weight at the rear end lower front end traction? And with a diff at the front wont you get more front end grip?

Targa isn't the important part. Weight balance was.

If someone waterboarded me and forced me to order a 911, it would be a Targa. I love the concept, and having a car that my SigOther didn’t know had the ability to have the roof off would be liberating. So RWD, AWD, I don’t give a shit. Make mine AWD (if that’s the only way I can get it) and rape me for those ceramic brakes.

I think it has more to do with the philosophy of the car. It’s more of a GT cruiser, for sunny week-end drives. I read it has softer suspensions as well. So it makes sense to have 4WD I guess.

My understanding is that the collapsible roof/styling necessitated the wider rear track. The AWD models all have the widebody, so they decided to only build it on that chassis. I don’t believe the widebody is an option on the RWD platform.
