What state do you think is the worst state to be a car enthusiast in? Factoring in things like car culture, events, fun roads, weather, living expenses, etc. California might have bad living expenses but everything else makes up for the crappy living expenses.

What is the worst state for a car enthusiast? Poverty.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:48 |

And our hobby is one of the easiest ways to get to poverty

Virginia.

What’s up with the font size differences between Canada and Mexico?
Does Mexico have to be on land and horizontal?

Alaska.
Try driving a ferrari 250 around there year round.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:52 |

I am not sure I agree. Yes cops are dicks but that state has a lot of beautiful roads and relatively mild winters.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:53 |

Alaska. Unless you’re an all-terrain logging vehicle enthusiast...
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:53 |
|
I have no idea probably.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:53 |

Alaska? I wasn’t expecting that answer. Sure the winters are bad but I imagine Alaska has a lot of beautiful and scenic roads.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:54 |

I figured Alaska would have a lot of beautiful driving roads
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:56 |

Jersey
Stupid drivers, stupid speed limits, stupid inability to pump your own gas, stupidly high insurance, hellish winters with brutually hot summers, horrendous roads, horrible traffic.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:56 |
|
Of the states I’ve driven through Nebraska and North Dakota are pretty near the worst places to drive through due to lack of topography.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:57 |
|
Maryland
Yea sure H2Oi is a terrible event and many of the people getting pulled over deserve it but it seems like the cops in MD in general are quick to pull anyone not in a 100% stock Grand Marquis over, and sometimes even the old lady in that Grand Marquis can catch an earful.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:57 |
|
I never thought about Jersey but that might be a pretty good choice. But what do you mean you can’t pump your own gas?
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:58 |
|
Yes! And I can’t imagine there is much car culture there and the winters are outstandingly horrible
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:58 |
|
It is illegal to pump your own gas in this state. I kid you not...
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:59 |
|
They don’t have car culture, they have truck culture.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 11:59 |
|
It has a lot of pretty back roads though. I was unaware of the cop problem
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:00 |
|
That might be the dumbest thing I have ever heard
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:00 |
|
No radar detectors, horribly strict cops, NOVA.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:00 |
|
For 3 months out of the year, and many of the populated cities in Alaska are isolated and only accessible by boat or plane
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:01 |
|
Hm unless you have a Jeep or 4x4 maybe it is car hell
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:02 |
|
I don’t live in Virginia but every time I go I manage to have fun on back roads without running into cops. But I don’t live there so I can’t claim to know it all.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:03 |
|
I would think Iowa or Kansas. Landlocked, flat, straight everywhere, strict cops (only major source of revenue is catching the speeders), snow drifts, slow economy, etc..
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:03 |
|
Cops are still a major issue. 20 mph over the speed limit, then jail.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:06 |
|
Also I have really strict cops here, stupid tint laws, and tolls every half mile on every major highway there is.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:07 |

I hate to say it, but Michigan isn’t that great. While we do have a bunch of people with classic cars, Muscle Cars are highly concentrated. You’ll see almost every single American-Made classic, and they’re all great, but the variety is lacking (though it is slowly improving)
The roads also aren’t that good. Worst road funding in the US, a terrible winter, and EVERY ROAD is straight. Unless you get to a road around a lake, in which case you’ll have to drive 30 MPH past a bunch of houses. There’s also not much elevation change, especially in the lower parts of the state.
Then again, we do have Woodward and a lot of development with the big 3 in the state.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:11 |

Canada’s bigger and better, obviously!
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:20 |
|
Lies. Everyone knows that there are only straight roads through Saskatchewan.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:22 |
|
Well, that would have to be Hawaii, yes? Everything is more expensive on an island - gas, parts - and the the total length of roads is short. Also due to its size, difficult to avoid salt spray.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:36 |
|
Those straight roads are great for navigation and transportation in general, but man are they boring.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:40 |
|
Not really. There just aren’t that many roads in total. And the more north you go the tougher they get. They don’t call them “tire eaters” for nothing.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:46 |
|
I think the roads around the lack and car culture make up for the bad winters. It isn’t the best state but certainly not the worst.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:47 |
|
I also imagine there is a lot of traffic. But again I think it is hard to call it the worse because of the topography and excellent weather
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:47 |
|
I agree they have to be the worst.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:48 |
|
Not in the USA though
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:48 |

If we’re talking about more than just the here and there car show or random gathering:
Well any state not equipped with an active racetrack or two. And well places like Florida or Idaho probably have sad car fans.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:49 |
|
Florida has amazing weather and Idaho has amazing roads
![]() 11/07/2015 at 12:57 |
|
Florida has blazing hot **s weather and Idaho has some roads.
Fixed.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 13:05 |
|
The roads in Hawaii (at least Oahu) are literally bumper-bumper traffic all day long.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 13:08 |
|
California. You pretty much can’t modify your car at all (legally) and you get nerfed versions of most production cars, gas is super expensive and filled with ethanol, and taxes in general are crazy high.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 13:10 |
|
Florida, unless you like doing stupid speeds, there are almost no fun roads.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 13:21 |
|
I’m going to vote for Hawaii. From what I understand, the traffic is constant and gas prices are high along with everything else.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 13:24 |
|
Virginia. Any exhaust other than factory (or like factory) Illegal, no aftermarket exhaust. Unless you just pay the tickets like I do.
Speeding can net you more jail time than child molestation.
The speed limits are low. Highways are still 55 mph in most places instead of your normal 60-70 as in NC, TN, SC, KY, etc.
Virginia state police are a revenue generating machine.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 13:33 |

Jersey is a fucking awesome state for car enthusiast if you really enjoyed Fury Road.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 13:35 |
|
Gotta disagree with the Alaska crowd. Off roading is epic, and the nearest cop is usually a hundred miles away. I’ve had some nutso motoring adventures up there. Also, wrenching is a community event and almost a cultural thing.
I’d say one of the super flat states with no twisty roads. Iowa maybe. I’m sure there’s plenty of drag racing, but not much else.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 13:39 |
|
Not a state, not even really a province, but a territory of Canada. Nunavut would be the fucking worst for a Jalop, no roads connecting towns, extremely harsh conditions for cars, all cars basically have to be imported by boat as there are pretty much no car dealerships and no highways to drive them there. And a polar bear might kill you.
Can be quite pretty though, if that’s any benefit to the utter hell it would be to anyone who enjoys cars.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 14:25 |
|
Right and that’s quite nice, but if we had just a few fun roads that would be okay. I have to drive like an hour away to find a decent drive. Basically have to make a day in Ann Arbor out of it.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 15:06 |
|
That seems pretty fair. I imagine it is still quite beautiful country though
![]() 11/07/2015 at 15:07 |
|
I agree with you. For a certain kind of enthusiast Alaska can probably be pretty great
![]() 11/07/2015 at 15:07 |
|
I would hate to live in Virginia but the roads are so nice
![]() 11/07/2015 at 15:08 |
|
But the weather is great and you can always drive around RWD cars
![]() 11/07/2015 at 15:08 |
|
Living is bad but the roads are so great
![]() 11/07/2015 at 15:19 |
|
It’s one of the rainiest states in the US, and there are almost know curves to exploit the benefits of RWD. Still not backing down on that one. Also, as someone who loves to go offroad, that sucks ass also.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 16:20 |
|
I get the roads are flat but there are still a lot of benefits compared to other states
![]() 11/07/2015 at 16:29 |
|
Besides lax transportation laws, I can think of none. Source: Lived there for 3 years.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 16:31 |
|
The weather doesn’t destroy your vehicles a big plus. Certainly not the best state. But I would think it is better than say Kansas
![]() 11/07/2015 at 16:39 |
|
Only state in the country where you can buy a Subaru wagon for 50 bucks, weld a set of truck wheels and tires on it, and hoon the everloving shit out of it on hundreds of miles of readily available logging roads without running afoul of the law.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 17:01 |
|
Due to the large salt filled thing surrounding most of Florida, shit rusts there too. At least more than most of the Southeast. Also, geographically Florida is the flatest state in the US.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 17:03 |
|
Only Oahu. Maui and most other islands have little to no traffic. Everything is somewhat reasonably priced considering it has to be shipped halfway across the pacific from California.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 17:11 |
|
New York City.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 17:20 |
|
Wrong about Iowa (though I understand why it’s easily stereotyped): the NE quarter of the state is filled with tons of curvy and scenic roads. And they aren’t just “good for Iowa”-roads, they’re straight-up fun regardless of where ever else you’ve been.
The rest of the state, yeah, they’re few and far between, but they are out there.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 17:23 |
|
Not really a state
![]() 11/07/2015 at 17:30 |
|
True, sorry I jumped to say that because it's bad here I hate driving in nyc.
![]() 11/07/2015 at 17:36 |
|
I really don't blame you
![]() 11/07/2015 at 18:48 |
|
Like 50% of people in Alaska drive F-150s, most of the rest drive a different domestic pickup or a full-size SUV of some sort. Not exactly a big crowd of enthusiasts there.
![]() 11/08/2015 at 01:34 |

Alaska?
![]() 11/08/2015 at 02:53 |
|
Fair enough.
![]() 11/08/2015 at 08:00 |
|
A lot of people seem to think so
![]() 11/09/2015 at 12:13 |
|
I’ve heard they have fantastic roads in Hawaii.
![]() 11/09/2015 at 12:14 |
|
Oregon has that law too.
![]() 11/09/2015 at 17:34 |
|
But isn’t getting a car there more expensive/difficult? I mean, you’re pretty much limited to dealerships *in* Hawaii. Not like you can drive to the next state over.
![]() 11/09/2015 at 17:44 |
|
Clearly Alaska, right? Unless you consider snowmobiles “cars.”
![]() 11/09/2015 at 18:01 |
|
Max speed limit is 45.
![]() 11/09/2015 at 19:43 |
|
California. Yes, nice roads and nice cars and all that, but high gas prices, hateful smog testing, policing everywhere, high traffic congestion, and even more stringent import regs than the rest of the states. And it never rains. Sometimes I can’t wait to be out of here.
![]() 11/09/2015 at 20:00 |
|
A lot of people have been saying Alaska. I was thinking Kansas
![]() 11/09/2015 at 20:12 |
|
at least you’d have lots of open road with few cops - even if that road *is* straight.
![]() 11/09/2015 at 20:23 |
|
I still think even with all of the places like Alaska and Kansas are worse. But I understand your reasoning
![]() 11/09/2015 at 21:19 |
|
But Alaska = off roading fun and Kansas = ?
![]() 11/09/2015 at 22:04 |
|
Alaska is great for off roaders but horrible for everyone else apparently. As for Kansas it has no redeeming qualities
![]() 11/09/2015 at 22:17 |
|
It’s flat?
![]() 11/10/2015 at 03:51 |

Don’t forget the rust.
I remember seeing an old ‘70s station wagon by the side of the road on Molokai. There was almost no body left on it - you could see straight through to the structural members underneath the body panels and the floor panels were non-existent. As I was eating lunch I began to wonder how long it had been sitting there rotting away, figuring it had to be at least 10 years. Then it drove by...
![]() 11/10/2015 at 03:55 |
|
Don’t forget all of the idiot tourists that want to stop in the middle of the road and look at everything.
![]() 11/10/2015 at 07:42 |
|
Yup! I got nailed by that. I was on vacation cruising along at what would be a very normal speed for a 6-lane dual carriageway in New England, except I was in Hawaii. Turns out the whole thing was a 45 mph zone. Even the cop said it was ridiculous!
![]() 11/10/2015 at 07:43 |
|
Great roads as long as you don’t break 45 mph, even on the highway, or you’ll end up with a nice big ticket.
![]() 11/10/2015 at 10:51 |
|
I guess that is good for high speed runs but that is also really dangerous
![]() 11/10/2015 at 12:21 |
|
Agreed. You get pulled over if you are driving anything other than a grey Prius.
