This spring I am thinking about selling my first ever vehicle and buying something new. Several questions for the trusted advisers at Oppo:
1. Should I sell my my truck? I know I will have sellers remorse selling my first ever car but will the benefits of a new vehicle be worth it?
2. If I sell my truck, the new car has to AWD and it has to get at least 25mpg high around 8k would should I buy?
3. And of course it needs to be reliable if it will be my only driver.

1. Yes. You’ll think you’re emotionally attached to it, you’ll regret it and then you’ll realize that you aren’t.
2. Get a B5 A4 with the 12v 2.8 engine. Extremely reliable cars. I used to own one, sold it with 145,000 miles on it. Never had any issues whatsoever. Timing belt, brakes and a wheel bearing were the only things it ever needed. It took premium gas though, got decent MPG and was an overall very decent, solid and comfortable car. The 12v 2.8 was probably the most reliable engine Audi ever made.
For extra emphasis, I felt comfortable beating on that car. Can’t say the same for my A6, which I’m scared to beat on because of the fear that somethings going to break.

Why AWD? That really limits your chioces.

In my experience, people who drive trucks and then trade/sell them for something else regret it later on.
I say this as a guy who is now on his third truck, and very much regretted trading #2 for a car. I still have the car...and another car...but I missed the truck terribly. I’ve had #3 for closing in on 2 years, and it’s wonderful to be back to truckdom.
Dally if you will...it’s not wrong to do so....but you’ll be back.
For the sake of completeness:
Truck 1: ‘92 Chevy S-10 4.3L 5-spd.
Truck 2: ‘99 Dodge Dakota Sport 3.9L 5-spd.
Truck 3: ‘05 Toyota Tacoma regular cab 2.7L 5-spd.

You don’t sell a 4wd S10, you covet it and keep it until it is older than the rocks it’s iron was mined from.

1. If there is nothing wrong with your truck and it has been reliable, keep it. Keep driving it until it dies or rusts away.
2. You’re getting by just fine without AWD right now, right?? Why must the new vehicle have AWD? Sounds like you’re getting your needs and your wants mixed up.
So... 25mpg with AWD and reliable for around $8K? Sounds like you “need” a non-turbo Subaru Impreza with a manual transmission.

So you're just never gonna part 2 or 3 that A4 review then, I guess?

Keep the S10 and get something else. Always good to have a paid for and reliable little truck around, and the resale isn’t that great anyway.

I don’t even remember where I left off. I might as well continue, since the car has been sold for a couple months now.

You did “IMMA DO A 4 PARTER- HERES THE INTERIOR!”
Then literally 0 other parts.

There were two parts! http://jkm7680.kinja.com/jkms-a4-one-ye…
Performance or exterior, maybe something else. You choose.

Both.

ONE AT A TIME, (because I’m too lazy to write both at the same time)

02-05 Subaru Wrx meets all of your criteria.

That doesn’t sound too bad. How much does it cost to fix a timing belt?

Winter, snow, hills, rural country.

That was kinda what I was thinking. If I sold the truck I would regret not having a six foot bed. I just was kinda wanting something better than 20mpg highway. I suppose I could get a second small car.
![]() 11/05/2015 at 19:30 |

I do covet it. That is why I think my heart would break if I had to sell it.
![]() 11/05/2015 at 19:32 |

I don’t need a manual and my truck is 4wd and the 4wd has saved my ass a few times in the winter. I just wish it got better mpg and while my truck is fun to drive I sometimes feel as if I am missing out on something better.

Let me just go break the bank with a hammer. Seriously though it is tempting

While that is the responsible choice I feel my soul would be crushed.

Those were AWD?
![]() 11/05/2015 at 19:35 |

DIY for $300 and $700 not DIY. Same price as a Camry t-belt replacement cost.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I’d recommend the 12v to anybody looking for cheap, reliable and AWD. I call it the Audi that isn’t an Audi.

Was it fun to drive on the twistys?
![]() 11/05/2015 at 19:51 |

Hell yes! Tight steering and handled pretty well. I had Raceland coilovers, Rs4 reps and a few other things on it when I sold it though, which improved the handling.

Easy! Turbo Subaru. I’d go for a Legacy GT because they’re usually driven/maintained by adults. And I think they look great!
![]() 11/05/2015 at 21:16 |
|
No.
![]() 11/05/2015 at 21:28 |

I mean it doesn’t have to be. Nothing is stopping you from getting a manual SX4, lifting it, putting on some nice knobby A/t truck tires and maybe even a turbo... all of which would still get you in under 8k.. I probably wouldn’t turbo it my self but I hear they stay fairly reliable with them.
![]() 11/05/2015 at 21:29 |

Tell me about that truck! I might buy it if you sell it.
Don’t sell it though. It looks nice, and nice S-10’s are getting hard to find.

That would be blasphemy yet funny.

It has a lot more rust this picture is a few years old. If I do sell it, it wouldn’t be until next spring/early summer. Just trying to decide what to do.

Better to have a cheaper vehicle and have money to go places and do things than a more expensive vehicle that causes you to not have money left over.

There are lots of fun options to meet your needs. I understand the first car attachment though. Eleven years later and I’m still holding onto my first car too. As much as I want a new daily driver, I just can’t convince myself to sell the old car. It’s mostly reliable and I love the darn thing.

There are worse things to be

1: Yes.
2: FP’s NPoCP Mazdaspeed6, Suzuki Kizashi, Suzuki SX4. The ‘Speed6 probably doesn’t meet your mileage requirements.
3: The above Suzukis are pretty reliable. Replacement parts might take some scavenging if there aren't any former Suzuki dealers nearby. But, hey, automotive adventure!

I would like to try a new input. Parameters are:
1) Under $10,000
2) American
3) AWD
4) 25+ MPG
