The Final Jeopardy question tonight was “ Its name refers to safety efforts that currently restrict cylinder capacity & prohibit supercharging”

The correct answer: What is Formula One?

Can someone explain this to me? It doesn’t really make sense. The Formula part of the name just means that all the cars are built to the same rule set and the 1 comes from the grade of the tracks that they race on. How confused were the Jeopardy people when they made this question?

Yeah, I didn’t get that either.

Also, their question about what causes the heat build up on the Concorde at high speeds was totally wrong. It’s not the friction of the air against hull that causes heat; it’s the pressure buildup of the air not being able to get out of the way fast enough.

The origins of the name “Formula 1” comes from post-War racing regulations being established, with the number corresponding to the most powerful classes. So Formula 1 had the biggest engines, followed by Formula 2, followed by Formula 3.

This is what happens when non-car-people try to be car-people.

There was a clip from The Weakest Link (remember that show...?) where they asked what nationality Mika Hakkinen was. The “correct” answer was Russian. Finnish wasn’t even one of the choices.

Are you serious?

Were they looking for the “1989 Formula One Technical Regulations?”

Ummm yeah besides what everyone else has said, currently Formula 1 cars ARE supercharged. Plus, the vast majority of racing series restrict engine displacement, and that limit is largely for safety, although also done to keep performance similar between competitors.

Turbocharging is a form of supercharging.

Are you sure? IIRC, it's the other way around.

Supercharging is any method of forced induction, Turbocharging is forced induction using exhaust gases to drive the impeller.
