Minor victory. Managed to score a replacement military rear door for the Defender. One which is in excellent condition, half the price of a new one, and is already painted NATO green. 6 hour round-trip to collect it on Saturday, but at least this one won’t bend and creak when I push on it. Fingers crossed that the electrics work!

Well done. NATO green, and not to mention has all the bracket foolery in place, unlike a civvie one would. Was the bending and creaking in the old door a case of rot at the areas below the top side skins? I didn’t even remember you had a bad door. Also, my 24 hour circus to Ohio and back with breakdowns laughs at your “6 hour round trip”.

Rot in the channels, both bottom corners, bottom mid section, and a split across the wiper aperture. Perhaps ironically, the only thing holding the door together is the NATO wheel mount and its 6mm steel backing plate, the same mount which has caused enough stress on the door to split 2 of the channels in the first place. If you shove your fingers under the lower door seal and pull hard you can bend the door a good 3-4cm away from the sill :/

When I “repaired” mine, it was really just taking the top, welding it up into a unit of its own, making a wholly new bottom frame, and re-skinning *that*. About as rough as what you describe, so I took the opportunity to make a half-door to match the side ones, kind of like on the Santanas.

I remember you saying about the half door. I considered repair, but as it’s my work vehicle I can’t have if off the road with no rear door for too long, a day at most, and repairing anything by myself is very much a trial and error affair! I am going to repair it though, and once done I’ll consider selling it with the wheel mount attached. The mount alone is fairly rare, so I’m hoping when it’s attached to a reconditioned door it’ll eBay quite successfully.

And now I’m considering not selling it because it’s rare and it’s for my vehicle spec. Maybe I’m just a hoarder.
