I’m doing, like, three things on it right now—any one of which would’ve brought it grinding to a halt previously. No jet engine noises, either!

SSDs couldn’t get cheaper any faster. Less moving parts and less heat is freaking lovely.

Dear KirkyV,

We’re sorry you have the skill and knowledge to install an SSD in a MacBook. We tried our best to engineer it so that you’d just have to buy a new one if you needed to upgrade.

Also very sorry we didn’t get a chance to milk you at the Apple Store, our Geniuses do have families to feed!

Your Friend,

Apple.

P.S. Have you seen our new iThing? You should buy it!

How do you install an OS on your new HD if your only copy is on the old (stock) HD?

Weirdly, I’ve found apple products very easy to work on, especially my iPhone. Everything is very well thought out, seems well engineered.

Of course, the ‘geniuses’ still struggle. I’ve completely given up on trusting anything apple tech support says, just like they seem to completely disregard any and all pertinent information I might provide to help troubleshoot.

Of course their newest solid state notebooks are a slightly different story, because the only way to make a computer that thin and light is to start giving up on large components all together and just glue shit down wherever it fits.

Put a copy of the OS installer on a USB stick. Google ‘OS X USB stick’, or something like that, for the method. There's a utility, DiskMaker X, that works pretty well.

I think 500GB SSDs are getting under 200 now - Picked up a Samsung 850 EVO and was proud of it until I bought my MSi laptop.

Laptop 2.5” harddrives really are the worstest ever. Also put a SSD in dad’s laptop since i got tired of him always complaining about it being slow.

SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner for Mac OS are also great tools to clone your existing drive and its data to the new drive.

SuperDuper is free but also accepts donations, CCC has a trial period but its more than enough time to do the clone.
