Porsche 911 Carrera coupe with a 6 speed manual with under 65K miles at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! = the absolute worst decision one of us would could make... BUT WE STILL WANT IT!
I’m positive that we all know ownership of this car will not end well, especially for us broke folk that make juuuust enough to actually buy this.
Why do we have these thoughts in our heads?
Well, maybe it’ll not be a total piece of crap?
It has low miles, i’ll DD it for a while and sell it later.
Well, i’m sure by now parts are cheap enough and available aftermarket.
All I have to do is not push it too hard and it will be fine.
Maybe the previous owner baby’d it.
I mean, it’s under $20,000, maybe this is the deal of the century.
REALITY
It will be!
You will drive it ALL the time and put chingos of miles on it
NO, they are not cheap. Don’t trust the aftermarket all the way and if you don’t know how to wrench, you will starve.
You WILL push it hard and wear the worn down car even more!
NO it wasn’t. This shady ass place probably picked this POS at an auction for like $8500, and for a reason lol.
It’s not, this WILL end badly.
As someone who busts ass for pennies, I shouldn’t have all these WAAANNTT and HNNNNGG feeling for this car. Even if I do get wholesale prices on parts and do the work myself and my dealership, this will end very bad I promise.
I know this....we all know this..... but we still WAAAAAAANT!!!

DOES WANT.
Minus the interior.

If you have a $30k budget, a $20k Porsche won’t completely ruin you for six months at least.
Do it, life is too short to drive boring cars.
EDIT: except for this one, that wood doesn't do it any favors. I'd lowball an offer just because of that.

That's about the going rate for a 3.4 996 of late. Do it. You'll hate yourself but love every minute.

Lol life is too short for dealing with headaches every day.
My budget is: “I could technically get this (financed) and things will be ok..... only if no sudden expenses come up in the next 3 years” lol!

Every minute the car is perfect yes (will not be every minute)

Nah, I’m eyeing a 996 for my next daily driver, but I’d have to burn the steering wheel on that particular one.

That wood is a headache...yikes.
I’m usually okay with wood but the Porsche stuff reminds me of a 90s Cadillac.

Conclusion: In all “Jalop” choices, the emotional overtakes the rational.

Why is that a bad decision?

But for real tho, this car could very possibly ruin someone that could afford juuust. Knowing this though, why are we are crazy enough to justify it lol. I’m trying to get rid of the reason I think this.

While it’s cool, IMHO. It violates one of my rule set A about cars that I can buy. It’s german. We transfer to rule set B, where I can buy German if I somehow become wealthy and don’t have to be on time to anything.

Have a Porsche-familiar mechanic check it.
Check the documentation for the latest maintenance and preventative RMS fix. If they haven’t been done, but the rest of the car checks out... knock the price down to compensate.
If the car doesn’t check out, run far, run fast.
If everything checks out, and you can get the car with maintenance and prevention taken care of... enjoy, and start running a budget for regular maintenance going forward.
It may not be perfectly reliable in the future... but it is a Porsche... it is designed at least as well as any other affordable car, and probably better in most respects.
No other used, or even new car is guaranteed to be reliable, either, and almost certainly not as fun at that price.
If I could justify another car payment like that... I would be in line behind you to find a nice 996 or 986/early 987.

You want the Porsche Experience for cheap? 10K Boxster plus 3K IMS and RMS fix and enjoy for years to come.

That interior is yuck to the max

I’ve considered going this route. It’s not nearly as pretty as the 997 I covet, but it’s so much cheaper, and still a 911.
Provided the PPI comes back with a clean bill of health, it won’t be that much of a headache. My Audi guy is also a Porsche specialist, probably the most highly regarded in the county. He said 996 parts weren’t any more expensive than those for my A4, it’s just the labor that’s a bit more expensive. IMS issues are bad when they pop up, but even on the 996 it is a very small percentage of cars and an IMS bearing upgrade will completely solve the issue.
Finally, you’re somewhat incorrect about beating on this car. If 911’s aren’t driven and revved on a regular basis then the lack of oil pressure will mean engine seals will get dried up and the engine will start leaking oil. A garage queen 911 is a problematic 911.
They also just don’t run as well...presumably they need the heat to clean the valves: My mechanic had a customer with a (very babied, barely driven) 996...he came in complaining that the car wasn’t running very well (low power, misfires, etc)...after the owner left my mechanic took the car and drove the piss out of it for a little bit, and when the owner came back to drive it, he was amazed at how much better it was running.
Find a 996 no IMS issue or that has the IMS upgrade, a good clutch and the interior you like, and it’ll be a solid and fun DD. Just make sure to drive the damn thing!

If labor is an issue, then i’m golden. It’s not just being able to do the work, it’s having time to do just the basic of things (which will take longer on this). All assuming of course. Too many what if and assuming here. Enough to just say nope

Busy, and hadn’t had much to share or say. By the time I get a moment to post something round these parts it ends up feeling forced and not worthwhile to bring to the oppoverse. (I blame Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes F1, JK).
Also instill haven’t watched the US or MexicanGPs. I know the outcome of both but just have a heavy overhead of projects before vacation in 2 weeks. Expect some new stuff from me after the holidays for sure. (Rear driveshaft and bottom end rebuild of the Disco are needing doing in addition to beating the ODB2 system my racketeering-county inspection requires for registration.
¿Y tu, que paso?

It’s all good buddy. You do what ya gotta do man. It’s that time of the year when time flies and everything piles up.
Me, i’m just here dude. Work is insane as always and LaLD keeps growing. OPPO is still here and chugging along.
