Oh boy just what we need, another stand alone brand. Why not shuttle all the “basic” Hyundai cars into Kia and just leave Hyundai the “luxury” marquee? Lexus didn’t turn the LS400 into a sub brand of a brand.

Hyundai is trying to get away from the Hyundai brand. When people hear Hyundai they expect it to be a shitbox.

I’m okay with this, though I don’t think it will have the same success as Lexus. Hyundai needs something to shake off their “cheap and crap” stigma and this is a way to do it, however, I think Genesis is a terrible brand name (and a marginal model name) though. “Genesis” already has too much baggage, in contrast to Lexus...whats a Lexus? Its only what Toyota defines in terms of customer perception. Also, Lexus was a success in that it had a very clear and defined mission (to persue automotive building perfection) whereas the Genesis brand is to...what? Capture a higher earning market segment? not a really inspiring mission statement. I wish them the best, but I sure hope they figure out what they want their vehicles to be other than “cheaper than other offerings in the segment”

Exactly. Its a different reason than when Toyota created Lexus, in that Toyota’s of the day were accepted and well loved for their base virtues. Hyundai has been making huge strides in building better cars but the bottom line is that most people think of that ratty excel from their collage days. Hyundai is right to try and break away from that, but just rebranding a few expensive niche models isn’t really going to do a lot, imo. Hyundai needs a new strategy and marketing effort to show it off. Something like an internal mission of highest value. Lexus is the “perfectionist”, BMW is the “enthusiast”, Mercedes is the “professionalist” and Audi is the “conservative fashionable one”. Genesis brand needs to be something it can sink its teeth into.

How much of this rebranding has to do with the US market and how much is for China?

They made their bed for over 20 years now they should lay in it. They are trying to skip ahead and win people over by creating a new name but that’s not how it works. It takes hard work and YEARS of overcoming their past to get people to realize they are actually good.
Jag was known for the exact same thing, crappy British cars with a shitload of problems. Now people literally salivate when an F Type comes roaring by. They too are trying to change public perception. Same thing with Cadillac. Neither of these brands decided let’s make a sub brand that’s actually good to make people forget about years of bad cars.
Hyundai should stay the course, every day I’m seeing more and more Hyundais on the road and that’s a good thing. By saying “No here’s the Genesis brand, these are the good ones” is opposite of what they should be doing to build the brand.

I was waiting for this to happen. The Genesis was already both a sporty couple and a mid size sedan and the Equus has entirely unique badging anyways. That’s like the Mustang being a Taurus Coupe
It makes sense. People refuse to cross shop an S Class or 7 Series with the Equus when dollar for dollar, its a better car.

Recently, I’ve felt like Kia was generally more up-scale than Hyundai. With the exception of the Rio, their cars looked better and had better specs. The 2015 Optima shits all over anything Hyundai has except the Genesis, but then the K900 also shits all over that anyway.
