The moment they do is the moment their luxury models are taken more seriously. And the less they’ll need to make the Genesis look like a big Sonata.
So soon it will be said the genesis of Genesis came after the genesis of the Genesis.

Taken more seriously like Lincoln and Cadillac?

I’m sure that’s the hope. And this way, a car like the Equus can be taken more seriously.
I just wonder where that’ll leave a sales dud like the Kia K900.

I saw a k900 the other day and did not know what it was at first glance, but thought “damn, I like that.” Then I realized it was a KIA and my car snobbery won the best of me and I wrote it off as a car I have no interest in. I’m honest about my judgement of the car, but so are the rest of luxury car buyers (even if they don’t outright say it). Maybe one day the Koreans will break the barrier, but I would bet against it.

This is a smart move. Now Toyota needs to make the Land Cruiser its own brand.

Give the Equus and its dated styling the axe and bring the K900 under the Genesis brand as its replacement. I think this brand would be like the Infiniti to Hyundai/Kia’s Nissan. Q60=Gen Coupe, Gen sedan fals between Q50 and Q70, and K900/Equus is Q70 or even higher. Then complete the lineup with a big, body-on-frame SUV (like the QX80) that could be derived from an updated Borrego (remember that?) platform, a convertible Gen coupe, and a pimped-out Sorento/Santa Fe (even though those are already pretty nice as-is) to compete with the QX60. Boom. You got yourself a respectable brand.

You know, I think they already told dealers that. I got a letter in the mail last week from Towne (where I bought my Mazda) and next to the Hyundai logo was one that just said “Genesis” as a stand-alone brand.
I wondered why that was.

Well at least now the Genesis Coupe branding will make sense.

why? LX/LC/GX? It would be the japanese Hummer then get destroyed when gas goes back up to $4.00

I think it’s a good idea. If they can snap up a few more European engineers they can probably throw together some nice stuff; their recent Genesis concepts have been very intriguing. They already have the Audi designer, a BMW M-engineer, and a chassis expert previously with Lotus - it’s a pretty damn decent start (based on my non-existent knowledge of automotive design and engineering).

No, it would be more like Japan’s Land Rover or Jeep. You’d have a small, purpose-built off-roader (FJ40-esque), a large, luxurious off-roader (200 series), maybe a sport version, resurrection of an older model (70/60 series maybe), etc.

My parents have gone from owning an ‘04 F150 and an ‘06 Grand Caravan to a ‘14 Kia Cadenza and a ‘15 Santa Fe. Both extremely well-equipped, both under $40k. Don’t knock it ‘til you try it.

A lot of people wrote the Koreans off at being even the companies that they are now. They also wrote off the Japanese entering the luxury game as well.
Personally, I’m just hoping for a steep depreciation curve on the Hyundai Genesis sedans.

I think the new Sonata was meant to look like a smaller Genesis. Also a mistake, I think. It made the Sonata boring and diluted what cachet the Genesis has.

I didn’t mean to knock them, I think they truly are great and have argued for them so many times. Just stating that if given $40k I would not buy a Kia or a Hyundai. But I wouldn’t buy any new car for $40k when there are so many cool cars with great depreciation.
Edit: also those two are great cars but aren’t trying to be luxury cars so doesn’t really enter into the topic.

When the Equus is not longer prefaced with ‘Hyundai’ it will do better as a vehicle, for sure. Though Genesis Equus sounds silly.

I’ve been in a Genesis, and while it’s a nice car, they just aren’t yet ready for the big show.

It does. But did you ever notice that early Equus models also had alphanumeric badges?

I didn’t think you were knocking them, I was just sayin’. However, I’d say the Cadenza is definitely trying to be a luxury car. It’s got rain-sensing wipers, hydrophobic glass, AFS headlights, BLIS (actually that’s pretty common these days), adaptive cruise, lane departure warning, heated/cooled seats and heated steering wheel, and Nappa leather. All that, for under $45k MSRP. Sure, almost all those things can be had in a 2006 Lexus LS430, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a luxury car. In fact, maybe one of the most luxurious you can get for the price.

Hmm. I thought the early ones had it. I saw them at the auto show versions back in 2010.

I dunno then. I’ve seen quite a few Equi and none of them had it. Could have been a preproduction thing that was kept for non US cars. I know non-US ones do have them.

Everyone loves them, any reason why you didn’t care for it?

I just got the sense that is still a very unrefined design. It had all the gadgets and gizmos, all of the creature comforts and the ride was there, but...just something about the way it was all executed. It just wasn’t there yet.
