I will make this as quick and succinct as possible. My Pontiac G8 GT, 114k on the odometer, is in the process of eating its camshaft as a result of a faulty lifter on cylinder 7. As a result of the engine’s active fuel management the valve on cylinder 7 is sticking and possibly causing damage to the camshaft. The dealer is quoting a minimum cost of $3,400 is the cost for fixing the lifters, possibly this could balloon up to $4,700 if the camshaft is damaged in any way, which it probably is. I am not nearly skilled enough to attempt the fix myself, nor do I have a third car for this to be out of commission. The question becomes, do I pony up for an engine swap at a speed shop?

id trust a speed shop more then a dealer frankly

I think the car would be down for the same amount of time to swap motors or just the cam. I'd look at doing a ls3 conversion. Get rid of that active fuel garbage. Those lifter are notoriously weak and your getting first hand experience. Plus you could hot cam or Asa cam swap it.

Nah, have the dealer do it. Some have best trained staff anywhere, regardless of what oppo thinks, and as a bonus you should be able to get a free loaner.

You can build a hell of a motor for $3,400

$4k to repair a lifter? WTF...

Engine swap? What?
This should be priced like a cam swap IMO. $1000 for a factory replacement cam seems steep. It is a hydraulic roller, not a flat tappet so maybe you will be lucky.

I do have the loaner currently while it was diagnosed.

Usually that only applies if you have a warranty

Delete AFM, add a sportier camshaftand add regular lifters.
Mabye there’s some performance shops around that you could take it to.

They want to replace all 8 lifters involved in the active fuel management. Obviously labor.

Thats a seriously good idea.

Well I work at a GM dealer, depending on where you are located, maybe I could help with parts. Feel free to email me dylan_sailing@hotmail.com

I agree with the general consensus here. It’s only an LS2, so charging almost $4,000 for a cam/lifter replacement is ridiculous. I’d either find some used LS2 heads and have someone slap them on, or bite the somewhat larger bullet and do a better cam/lifter replacement. You’d be surprised at how much a tune would remediate the slight loss in gas mileage (if any).

At this point I’m leaning towards a lifter replacement and a performance cam. I found a shop that’ll do it for a couple grand.

Sounds like a good deal. Definitely the route I’d go myself. I assume it’s an automatic since it’s not a GXP, so the cam will likely go unnoticed until you want it to be. ;)

Yeah its an auto, it’s actually my wife’s daily driver.

Be prepared for some high numbers for prices. I was shocked at the quotes I got for can swapping my 98 SS camaro.
I’m counting down the days for my factory power train warranty to go on my 14 camaro ss so I can crack it open to cam swap and get rid of the displacement on demand lifters

The quote I got for a swap was 2k on top of the engine. Or 2k or so to fix the lifters and swap out the cams.

I’d browse LS1tech and see if there are any sponsors somewhat local to you. There are some top notch LSX shops on there that could offer some good advice.

I’ll check that site out.

It’s definitely worth a browse. Go to the actual forum and poke around. There are specific sub forums for various things, as well as region specific ones down towards the bottom. There’s not a bigger wealth of LSX knowledge in the world than that place.
