Kinja'd!!!

Dense fog at night along unlit country roads. Made me wish I had foglights, my high beams were pretty much useless. In fact I’m thinking of making a new lower grille out of stainless steel mesh and setting some foglights into it.

Kinja'd!!!

Woke up to news that London was shrouded in Fog. London was indeed shrouded in fog, I mean properly shrouded. I thought fog in London was a story grandchildren are told, guess I have a story now.

Wow that photo is pretty cool. I didn’t know the fog was affecting down south too.

I had the same problem Wednesday evening, unlit country lanes for about the last hour of my journey up to the wild north (middle of the North York Moors). No front fogs on the Honda, so full beams and follow the white lines, and then when the white lines disappeared, follow the satnav at very low speeds indeed. Not so fun.

How many people did you see driving without lights on? Thats always a fun game to play; count the morons.

Surprisingly everyone had lights and drove really well. It reaffirmed my faith in humanity.

Have driven in enough fog banks to know that they’re not just for show, and to insist that any vehicle I own has them.

And you should know, if you don’t already, that high-beams are counter-productive. All you’re doing is lighting up the fog bank just off your cars nose, and reflecting that light back into your eyes, thereby decreasing your night vision.

Captain Obvious would like to point out that foglamps should be positioned as low as possible. I always facepalm when I see somebody call the higher-mounted driving lights fog lights. The whole point is to get under the fog to light up the road ahead, since fog banks sit a foot or two off the ground.

The high beams seemed to give me more than the dipped beams did, although I see where you’re coming from. Depends on the specific conditions and the car I suppose.

If I install fogs they’ll be in the lower grille which is only about 8 inches off the ground.

I missed my chance to nerdily point out not to use high beams in dense fog. Proper fog lamps are mounted low to give a good angle for lighting without glare, and usually amber tinted to increase contrast.

Christ yes, the fog has been intense in the past two days. Could barely even see the path to the bus stop this morning.

I think maybe the conditions forced people to concentrate more than usual.

The fog the last few days here where i am in Germany has been very thick. It’s been foggy all day both days so far. Luckily i haven’t experienced any asshat drivers with their lights off.

It’s even put in an appearance down here, and I’m as far south as the South-East gets. Nothing quite as bad as that picture, though.

I finally fixed my fog lights but they don't really seem to do a whole lot. Maybe it is a poor design? Cheapo light bulbs? Either way, just using the low beams seems effective enough and I just drive slow. But I would like to improve mine to actually help in the fog. Maybe yellow bulbs would be a good idea.
