My ‘98 Subaru Legacy Outback got a new rattle this weekend! It’s only audible from under the car, and I’m hoping it’s coming from the little spring bolt doodads that hold the exhaust flex joint together. I’ll try to get the car on ramps tonight and hopefully be able to easily fix it.

It’s the heat shields on the exhaust. Cut them off and enjoy the silence (Depeche Mode).

You ended up being entirely correct. I thought the previous owner had removed all of the heat shields on the exhaust already, but the little shields on the flange end ended up being loose and causing my rattle. They were rusted enough that I was able to pop the spot welds with a small prybar and pull them right off without having to take the manifold off. There were little “booger” welds on them that made it look like somebody had tried to stop them from rattling previously.
