So, I need new summer tyres in a few months (in april or so), my current summer tyres are 205/50 17”.. NOT easy to find tyres with those measurements. So I thought I’d do the smart thing and get a set of wheels with some tyres in 195/65 15” (what the car came with from the factory) for about 600 ‘murican bucks.. So I drop by a dealer, and he says “well, I’ve got a set of 225/45 17” Continental Sport Contact 5 here, yours for 450 ‘murican moneys”.
The things is, I’ve got a tiny problem with the current 205/50 17” GoodYears and a small amount of rubbing (inside of the wheel well on full lock), so getting a set of tyres that are 2cm wider is probably not that smart.. But they are really cheap, and I don’t have a lot of money.
So, help me Oppo, should I get the stupid wide tyres and suffer some rubbing so I can spend the money saved on sportier suspension? Or should I be smart about this and buy the more expensive set of wheels in stock dimensions and just replace the shocks and springs with something close to stock (the sportier suspension lowers the car about an inch from its current height).
Keep in mind that I’m not a teenager.

Don’t rub.

Yeah, kinda what I’m leaning towards as well.. I’ll have to roll the fenders if I’m going to run 225s..

April is a long way off... Save your dollars and get the right tires for your ride!

Sure, but I live in Norway.. the cost of shipping..

Rubbing is bad. Don’t do it. What Saab do you have? I’m on the lookout for a decent 07+ Sportcombi 93 2.0 or Aero.

rubbing rubs me the wrong way
Get a good suspension instead. Espeically if you can get Bilstein shocks. And there’s nothing wrong with the OE size 195/65-15. There are some good tires in that size like Dunlop Signature II and Kumho TA71.

Yeah, I guess I’ll do that, it’s an old decent car, it deserves to be stock(ish).

Everything is in tusens of kroner in Norway.

I say go to a local salvage yard and find some good wheels for cheap with tires. I did that with my e28 535i with VR390 size wheels. Suuuper rare size. I bought a set of 4 e30 wheels and tires for $200USD at salvage yard
![]() 11/02/2015 at 14:06 |
|
Yeah.. but.. well.. not that many Saabs at the salvage yards here (they simply won’t DIE) :P
![]() 11/02/2015 at 14:06 |

Those 9000s are fun as hell and still super cheap if you can find them in decent shape. I’d say go stock on the tires and keep it original as possible
![]() 11/02/2015 at 14:07 |

So 5000 Kroner for the 15” wheels and tyres and 3800 for the continentals, Respectively.
Or, £382.10 and £290.30 respectively.

Oh come on dude. What was the town you live in? I bet I can find a salvage yard with SAABs
![]() 11/02/2015 at 14:08 |

I got mine for 4500 NOK (530 USD). Just shy of 120k miles. 2 previous owners, no rust. So yeah, I’m happy.

Spend extra on the stock wheels and get stock springs.
Otherwise you’ll be spending the same money on larger wheels and springs anyway but then you’ll have to factor in the cost of the rubbing parts. Things that aren’t designed to rub tend to wear very quickly and you’ll still have the same situation once you’ve repaired or replaced the parts anyway.
At least this way you’ll then be able to save up for the suspension kit you want without paying for repairs while doing so.
Think twice, spend once. Good.
Think once and spend twice. Bad.

I haven’t see a SAAB in forever. Good luck with that.

Indeed.

There’s a few close(ish) by, but they demand WAY too much for the wheels. But it looks like I’ve found a parts car for LESS than what I’d pay for just a set of wheels now :)

This will fix your problem.
![]() 11/02/2015 at 14:13 |

Yeah. I know I know.. Looks like I’ve found another 9000 for cheap though. If the deal goes well I’ll make one good car out of two decent ones.

I need to brush up on my Norwegian. I guess rewatching Lilyhammer on Netflix will have to do. I don’t know why they cancelled it.

There’s not enough Norwegian/Scandinavian Restaurants in the UK.

NIIIIIIICE! good luck dude, take your sweet multi tool. How far are you driving?
![]() 11/02/2015 at 14:42 |

Well, they do sell lobscous in scouserville though? That’s quite Norwegian.. But Scandinavian cuisine is probably not the first thing people in Mayfair or in Belgravia crave I’d say :P
![]() 11/02/2015 at 14:45 |

Not that far.. pretty much exactly 600 miles (Hamar - Bergen - Hamar) 12-14 hours behind the wheel.

Well the nearest City to me is Brighton and it’s on the coast and it’s very Bohemian I think it’d work well down here. But alas, there’s no Scandinavian Restaurants.

Find someone with money and I’ll volunteer as a chef. Kjøttkaker i brun saus. Stekt makrell med poteter. Gravlaks. Ørret i urtesaus. Reinsdyrstek. I’ll cook it ;)

It’s completely out of my comfort zone. Also, I have very little pounds or Kroner surely someone must have thought about it. You could be second most famous Scandinavian in Brighton, after PewDiePie. A-ha did shoot a video in my town and Norway’s 2015 Eurovision entry Kjetil Mørland used to live in my town too.

Saabs are quite plentiful in the U.K. and are really cheap but no one buys them because they worry about getting parts, cost of repairs and road tax when parts are available easily sourced and quite cheap.
But people are the same with Rover, parts are still available new but because the company isn’t around anymore, people won’t touch them.
Just looked at Autotrader here and it’s got 1,745 Saabs starting out at £150 for a 1993 Saab 9000 2.3L petrol ‘spares and repairs’ and starting at £350 for a 2002 Saab 9-5 2.3L T Arc 4Door with MOT till April 2016.

I spoke with someone from the parts department at Saab last year, he said we’d have spare parts for at least 15 years from Saab.
I’d love to own a Rover though.. a P6 would suffice :)
![]() 11/02/2015 at 15:08 |

I agree! It's one thing to mess with sizes for performance or price reasons but when your larger tires are already running a little no sense going even larger.
![]() 11/02/2015 at 15:20 |

I’ve added a bit to the bottom of the other post with some cheap Saabs on Autotrader.
I loved our old Rover 820si. The 1.4 25 and the 1.8 75 a bit less but the 800 was fantastic.
I would love a Rover P5b 4.2Litre.
or a Rover 220 Coupe or 827
![]() 11/02/2015 at 15:28 |

Me old neighbour owns THREE bloody P5B’s
Yeah, I know Saabs are cheap in the UK, but compare prices in Norway and the UK then compare the average wage.. I’d say we spend about the same percent of our money on cars :P

225s on a J Body? Huh.. I’m seriously reconsidering things now..
Which J platform car though? I’m guessing it’s not an Opel Ascona or a Holden Camira.
