These are the saddest calipers ever.

However, it makes me wonder why nobody has made saw blade shaped novelty rotors. Or anything fun at all with the portion beyond where the pads land...

You can get them, but there’s not much point. Generally you want the largest discs possible, so if you have clearance for the pokey-out bits, you have room to increase the disc diameter.

Plus, it’s presumably not worth all that CNC time for any purpose other than being blingy - which may be why you see them on motorbikes and mountainbikes, but not on cars.

Audi offers these on the R8. Not quite saw blades, but interesting nonetheless.

The only thing I can think of is that it’s done for more surface area to try and maximize heat dissapation.

They would gain you a tiny bit of surface area where the pads don’t hit. The thing is that you wouldn’t want them to be like heat sinks as they’d get damaged easily.

I don’t think the pads ride on the bits that poke out. If you’ve ever pulled some really worn rotors, there is a channel where the pads rode and a high section at the edge... Hence wondering why people don’t make novelty ones, which apparently they do according to others here. Pretty cool. Just not quite as novel as they probably could be.

“I don’t think the pads ride on the bits that poke out.”

They don’t, which is why it’s dumb. Manufacturers sometimes claim it’s to increase the area for heat dissipation, but obviously that’s bollocks because you lose more side area than you gain edge area unless you’re doing something absurdly frilly.

The section at the edge is already technically wasted. Doing something interesting with it is no different from body or wheel styling.

Yeah, that’s what I was saying. It’s more obvious on bikes, so more common there.
