I’ve given up looking locally. For example:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
In short, $16k for a 2011 Mazda3. I could drive to San Antonio or Waco and get a CPO 2014 for the same price.
And the dealership. Will. Not. Budge. Because they’ll sell it. Somebody will move here from San Francisco on Tuesday and buy it sight unseen on Wednesday, just so they can have a car for the 9 months they’re here.
This post in relation to McParland’s article today about driving to get a better deal.
I’m now looking at high-depreciation near luxury cars like Maximas. If I have to spend 2+ hours a day in 9MPH average traffic, I might as well be comfortable. Plus you can find 2009-2012 Maximas that were $33-36k new with about 80k miles for less than $14k without even trying that hard.

“near luxury cars like Maximas”
Hahahahahaha.
Oh, you were serious.

As a fellow Austin resident, I can vouch.
And yet, a ton of sub-100k-mile Infiniti G-series for less than $10,000.

I’m still trying to process this one myself...

If you want fuel economy for your trip, I would not really recommend a Maxima. Our 2003 has pretty crap fuel economy (11.5 l/100 km or so), and I can’t imagine newer ones having much better fuel economy.

to me, near luxury equals Buick or Mercury (If you’re ok with the vintage) or...sorry mopar fans...Chrysler.
Maximas as nissans, that’s entry level bro.

I came here to comment this.

Nah
BMW 228i or MB CLA250, Audi A3
Buicks are not even close. Throw in some leather and wood vinyl = luxury? Nah.

I just see those as Luxury, I don’t like German vehicles but I respect their category. That’s entry level to their brand, but it’s still Luxury in my book.
You need those “mid-levels” for “near-luxury”

The previous gen with the CVT seems to average mid-20s, which is still better than my CRV.

Well, what can I say, that’s how the Maxima is classified by the industry. Any publication will call the Maxima a “near luxury sedan.” Mid-size sedans like the Accord, Camry, Altima, etc comprise the segment below, while true luxury cars like 5-Series and such sit above. But compare the interior alone, and the Maxima is without question better than the Altima, and to be fair a LOT nicer than a 3-Series, especially from the same vintage (2009-2014). I think it’s evern better designed and made than the Infiniti G series. Audi might be better in general, but until you’re spending north of $50k, the previous gen Maxima had more features, better quality materials, and generally better design than anything else.

Yeah, I’ve looked at a few, mostly 2008-2010 sedans. They all need pretty substantial repairs, especially to the interior. Almost every 2007-09 G has flaking/melting interior paint, so the steering wheels have to be replaced (Infiniti never made them to be disassembled and refinished), door trim pulled and refinished, consoles stripped. Otherwise they look like flaccid ass. And aside from the RWD thing, I think the Maxima is generally a better car for my driving experiences, aka sitting interminably in shitty ass traffic. The seats are better, the amenities more complete, and the fuel economy stronger.
So I’m not opposed to a G, but finding one that doesn’t need substantial fixes or that’s been thrashed by a bro-jock has not been easy.

This is going to sound very to accepted opinion here, but have you thought about a hybrid? If you’re stuck in traffic for most of your commute and on surface streets the rest of the time, it makes the most sense.
My fiancee has a Ford C-Max, and in urban/stop & go driving, she can push 50MPG on her commute. There are a few CPO in Austin for under $20k. Here’s an example. http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/…

This is going to make me sound like an old man, but I’m more interested in being comfortable than getting good gas mileage. Short of going with a luxo-hybrid (MAYBE something like a Fusion/Milan) I just don’t think I’d be happy settling for a car designed for maximum weight savings. The C-Max is better than some, but I know my brother’s Volt is killer on long drives and my neighbor’s Prius isn’t much if any better.
And really, I’m looking for something in the $12-15k range that I could get with minimal outlay of cash after selling my CRV.

I’ve done a lot of long-haul driving, and I’ve always been comfortable in it. Look at the SEL trim, and you will not be disappointed.
