Two of them were green.
The S4 is an auto, but it’s also a wagon.

The want is strong for Mercury Cougars.

Very.

Back in the day (early 2000s is back in the day now, FYI), automatic transmissions were usually 5 speed units, and man were they slow and sloppy. I can see why manual transmission Audis and BMWs were preferred.

HIYYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Classic Mercury ALARM!
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:03 |

I’d prefer a manual as well. Because then I would have 5 gears.

As a representative of Mercury Muscle from the 60’s.
MY GOD THE WANT
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:05 |

It’s awesome. I want it so bad.

Almost bought a light blue with white convertible top one when I was Montego shopping. Montego was both cheaper, and in better shape so it won out
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:07 |

The covered lights are awesome.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:08 |

Are you sure yours isn’t a 4-speed with overdrive? I would swear the transmission in the E46 is a 5-speed auto with overdrive, or maybe a locking torque converter.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:10 |

Yeah man, I hear they’re a bitch to keep working properly, but awesome none the less.
I knew a guy in Jersey with an old Lincoln with hideaway lights. He had these little black pegs he’d put behind the lights because they’d never stay closed. if he wanted his lights on or up he’d pull the pegs out.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:11 |

No. I think it’s just a 4 speed.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:11 |

So worth it.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:13 |

Well shitballs. That’s no fun.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:13 |

Clearly a Ford with braces :3
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:14 |

Pretty slow.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:23 |

Oh yeah, he never drove it at night anyhow. The rest of the car was immaculate, he just couldn’t keep getting parts for the lights.

YOU WATCH YOUR MOUTH
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:28 |

Imagine the looks he got.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:30 |

Ha, they were really subtle. He drove it on nice days during daylight hours, never needed the lights so no one ever really knew.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:30 |
|
But now i know. But I promise I won’t tell.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:32 |

Yeah those hideaways rarely work unless someone is really committed to it. My dad has a ‘69 cougar and I think I recall seeing the hideaways work correctly maybe once. Typically he can get them to open when turning on the lights, but no hope in getting them to close.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:34 |

But why not just have a mustang? I suppose it's cool to have something that looks slightly different and more character, but they are a bit badge engineering for the most part (obviously that changed in later generations).
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:36 |
|
Why the hell did the cougar change into this?
And then this??
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:41 |
|
Yeah if I had one I’d just do my best to never open them. Looks cooler closed anyhow.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 15:41 |
|
I don’t know. Because they could?
![]() 10/30/2015 at 16:18 |

While I fully admit you’re right, and it’s mainly badge engineering - I’m just a sucker for them. It’s one of those things that I can’t explain; there are mysteries in life we’re not meant to understand.

That place looks too familiar, and sweet cars too. I have a deep want for that S4.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 17:39 |

How familiar?
![]() 10/30/2015 at 17:42 |

Tennis lesson familiar.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 17:43 |

When?
![]() 10/30/2015 at 17:47 |

4 or 5 years ago
![]() 10/30/2015 at 17:48 |

Do you perhaps remember the name of the instructor?
![]() 10/30/2015 at 17:50 |
|
No I do not, but tell me where that is and I may be able to tell you.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 17:54 |

Does the name Boo sound familiar?
![]() 10/30/2015 at 17:57 |
|
Nah, not for a human at least.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 18:04 |

It’s on highway 119, just off of 65. South of downtown. Indian Springs.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 18:10 |

Ah, I have been there, but I took lessons at the Birmingham Country Club, and the tennis court parking lot looks a lot like that.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 18:14 |

Most tennis court parking lots look the same.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 18:32 |
|
That is very true.
![]() 10/30/2015 at 20:02 |
|
Might be a little difficult to drive at night then lol
![]() 10/31/2015 at 13:20 |
|
Well, like I said, dude never drove it at night, was tucked back in the garage by then.
![]() 10/31/2015 at 17:55 |
|
Ahh that makes sense then. I love driving at night. Always nice to not have traffic and something about cruising in the dark with some good tunes is always fun.
![]() 11/02/2015 at 09:55 |

It becomes more of a challenge in a classic though. The lights normally aren’t great, visibility isn’t always great (mine only has 1 side view mirror, yes that’s factory it didn’t fall off haha) and the dashboard doesn’t have great back lighting.
![]() 11/02/2015 at 11:15 |
|
Do you know what the purpose is of only having 1 side mirror? I know my dad's Cougar is the same way and I always wondered who thought that was a good idea lol. I can understand the whole technological advancements making night easier though. Even 80s/90s cars often have terrible lighting that you can see a vast difference when you drive anything 2000s+
![]() 11/02/2015 at 11:48 |
|
The 1 side mirror was just that they didn’t think it was NEEDED. Kind of like how eventually ABS and then Traction Control, etc starts out as a “luxury safety feature” before it eventually becomes standard because everyone goes... hey maybe we should ALL have this.
![]() 11/02/2015 at 13:11 |
|
Hmm, I guess that makes sense. Just always looks silly to me being non-symmetrical. And I wonder if the rest of the world did it the same way?
![]() 11/02/2015 at 13:39 |
|
To me it just looks crazy vintage. It was an option on my Montego...that just like so many other boxes, they chose not to select...
![]() 11/02/2015 at 15:30 |
|
It is kind of wild the amount of things that are "standard" in new cars!
![]() 11/02/2015 at 15:37 |
|
Especially if you spec vs a 50’s or 60’s car. Some options for my 68 Montego:
1 Speaker AM Radio (this was an option. They turned down FM of course).
Power Steering (optional, it has it with my Cyclone Package)
Power Brakes (optional - not selected)
Passenger Side Mirror (optional - not selected)
Front Disc Brakes (optional - not selected)
Just a few of the crazier ones.
