Well this is kinda disappointing. The FoRS will come in at a whopping $47k CAD according to a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I guess Ford can’t be blamed too much. Here’s a paragraph from that second link:

And back to the price: While the $46,969 sticker may seem steep when compared to the starting price south of the border of US$36,605, using the Sept. 18, 2015, exchange rate, that works out to $48,148 in Canadian funds.

Regardless this is waaay above the Golf R’s $40k MSRP and just slightly north of the top-of-the-line STi Sport-Tech trim which comes in at $45,395. The Sport package comes in at $40,795 and the base STi goes for $37,995. I have the sads now.

To be fair, doesn’t it have more power than all of them?

At that price, I’d probably be getting a V8 Mustang. Or an STI.

The RS is cooler than all of those for 1.

2 you’re technically getting it cheaper than we are!

3 I kind of though 46,969 loonies was more like 14 american dollars, so hey you’re really making out on this deal

Yup it’s considerably more powerful than the STi - 345 vs 305 HP. It’s actually closer to the CLA45 AMG in terms of power. But its price in the US market puts it about $2k more than the base STi and $3k less than the Limited trim.

HAHAHAHAHAH- free health care.

But you are correct... our dollar is not doing well.

But it is cooler than the others isn’t it? What’s a few extra mooseheads (that’s what we call a thousand dollars in Canada [I made that up])?

if that’s the case a base STI seems like an extremely better value. That’s just plain redonculous. I was expecting it to be for sure south of 40K like even $39,999.99 would be almost acceptable but $47k? no dice!

It SHOULD be what you guys call an extra thousand dollars!

And your free health care is expensive as hell thanks to high taxes, I mean, at least it’s fair but it’s not f-ing free (sorry this got political i’m just so sick of hearing “free”).

On the topic of cars, which I should try and stick to, the RS is so fucking cool it will shame all those others. It’ll be rare, how many STi’s do you see? How many Golf’s?!

RS man. RS.

I hear people say “I’d buy a mustang at that price!” but it’s a completely different style of car. Maybe you want people who have legs to be able to go in the backseat!?

Yikes, that sounds expensive. Isn’t car insurance also rolled into the price?

Car insurance is not rolled into car pricing, at least in Ontario (and as far as I know this doesn’t apply anywhere in Canada). There may be some provinces where it’s combined with the vehicle/plate registration but even those provinces only provide the basic liability protection - third party, private companies are the ones that provide the physical vehicle protection at an additional cost.

If you tried to get this thing insured in Toronto, I know most people, even with great driving records, would probably be paying close to $3k/yr for full coverage. In Ottawa, you might get away with around $1500 depending on the provider.

Also, the $46,969 MSRP isn’t going to include taxes (13%), destination/delivery (probably another $1.5k or something stupid) and other fun taxes (like A/C taxes). If you were paying sticker on this (I guess that really depends on demand for these) you’d be looking at closer to $55k out the door (and then insurance on top of that).

It's a frighteningly large amount to pay for a Focus, even if it's really awesome and I really want it badly.

Yup I am fully aware it isn’t exactly “free” but it is nice to leave a walk-in clinic with only a $2 fee for medication or a hospital with $50 for food and nothing else. However it isn’t nearly as nice when you get hit with taxes on a large purchase e.g. a car. I got a quote on the aforementioned Golf R a while ago. MSRP of $39,995. Dealer tacks on some BS fees for a total of $42,961. I can deal with that. And then the damn sales tax for a total purchase price of $48,536!!! $5,575 in taxes. I do wish cars would be subject to less tax.

Back to cars. I agree with everything you said. Even though I am a huge STi fanboi and owning one is on my list of things to do before I die the RS won me over with its looks and power numbers. Mustang isn’t even in the running for me, as you said it’s just way too different. And AWD in our climate is a significant factor.

I imagine it’d be over $55k. I went to a Subie dealer a while back and they quoted $54k after fees and taxes for an STi. I had a really terrible salesperson so even though I asked for the Sport package he may have priced a Sport-Tech because 54 seems totally ridiculous. Although it did have some significant import fees or something. Hopefully the RS isn’t subject to those because it’s “American” even though it’s built in Germany.

To help you further put it into prospective. CAD$47,000 =GBP£23,335.

Still sounds a lot you may ask.

The list price for the Focus RS in the U.K. is GBP£28,940 which equals CAD$58,287.

Do you feel any better about your price now then?

Granted there are differences in registration charges, taxes to be paid, etc...

Our price of GBP£30,000 is the ‘On The Road’ price which is first registration charge, road fund licence (road tax) and delivery charge.

Even then it’s not considered all that expensive.

It would be absolute madness to charge over $55k for a Ford Focus, even if it is a really cool one. It would definitely cause me to cross-shop against vehicles I probably wouldn’t have considered otherwise just because of the price. I find it difficult to even stomach the $30k or so for a Fiesta ST.

So does Canada do it the U.S. way of buying the car and then you pay the tax on what you paid. Ouch.

In the U.K. the tax is in the price of the car (you can get it tax exempt on the purchase if it’s to go abroad, company vehicle, etc...)

I was going to save and buy a new Miata/BRZ until I realized that they were going to crack 40k/35k easily in CAD with taxes in. I went with used NB instead.

The really sad thing is that even if the dollar gets back to parity, the price gap will not close proportionally. Back when the dollar was one-for-one, my grandparents went over to the States and bought a Torrent for 10 grand less than what it would have cost them here. (or so the story goes)

Kinja'd!!! valsidalv, reminding you that infiniti is an option > Svend

But how does it compare to the competition?

In that States the RS is only a bit more expensive than a base STi and significantly cheaper than the Limited trim STi. Which is why I was surprised to find that it is more expensive than the most expensive STi here in Canada.

BTW are there any other cars in the UK that are in the same class as the STi/R/RS that don’t exist in the North American market?

Kinja'd!!! Svend > valsidalv, reminding you that infiniti is an option

For example there is the Honda Civic Type R (I’ll do U.K. prices if that’s okay to save exchanging everything).

Kinja'd!!!

Which is £29,995 (an extra £2,300 if you want the GT version).

Renault Megane RS 275 at £23,935.

Kinja'd!!!

Vauxhall/Opel Astra VXR at £26,995 (still no word on the Astra Xtreme which will have a tuned 2.0litre turbo to 296bhp)

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Then there’s the SEAT Leon Cupra 280 (also available as an estate) with 276bhp at £28,210.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

There are quite a few other but to be fair in the U.K. and Europe there are a lot of hot hatches out there.

I guess one way of looking at it now is that, with the exchange rate factored in, we are paying a bit less for our cars than the US counterparts.

The only problem is that the base STi is lacking some creature comforts that I’d want in my year-round daily driver. If I was buying this as a second car or a track-day toy then I’d consider getting the base one.

I don’t even pay for most of my medications, I have good insurance (which is less than your increased taxes haha) and I’ve only payed for food when i stayed with my wife(her being the patient, she ate for free) and most generic prescriptions are free. Also, I’ve never waited months for a Dr. Appointment. Which I always thought was a joke until my Aunt and Uncle lived in Canada for 5 years, she could barely walk from a back problem and they said we’ll see you in 4 months.

Anyhow

The RS is definitely blowing away anything with a Subaru logo. AWD is a big advantage vs rwd, I know everyone on here says “just get snow tires” but in the great white north, it might be smarter to stick with AWD
