I’ve been looking for a certain car for a few months, and I know some of you all have waited for years to find what you’re really looking for.

I have two cars that are tied for best car ever. Charlie was an impulse buy. I test drove it, fell in love with it, and bought it on the spot. Granted, it was only a grand, but it was still an impulse buy, kind of. My Hyundai Elantra pretty much just fell into my lap, so I guess also zero minutes?

The best car I owned was my WRX. It took me about 3 months to find a good one. Sure, there were tons for sale but they were all either way too much money or completely ragged out. I even went to look at one only to learn that it was a salvage because a freaking tree had fallen on it. So I watched and waited and eventually found the perfect one. I still miss that car.

My jeep Samsquantch was the end result of about 6 months of Craigslist and auto-trader trolling, before I finally found the right model with most of the stuff I wanted at the right price. Of course, a big part of that was the ridiculous pricing of Jeeps in Tx.

So, days on the Fiat, but I want the perfect wagon and that’s taking a bit longer. I just didn’t vote based on that since there’s no guarantee I’ll ever get it.
I mean, I’d be happy with one of the old civic, tercel, or all-trac models, but if someone knows a single, high-income guy who would indulge me on an AMG wagon I’m not going to turn one down :)

I guess it took us a couple days to find my M3 on craigslist. It took a couple weeks for the title to get in so I could actually buy it from the guy, but that’s besides the point. Of course, I’ve only owned two cars in my 17 year life and the other one was a 20 year old GMC van so the M3 wins best car by default even if it was only $3300 and needed work.

It took me a couple of months to find my 944. And I spent those months driving a borrowed auto Cobalt. Those were dark days indeed.

Looking for my first, and current car, I got up early to meet a guy selling a Mercedes 190e, and over breakfast I was looking at some other cars for sale like I do all the time and saw a old Celica was uploaded with only some blurry pics and a phone number. We canceled the Mercedes on a hunch and drove to the Celica. I bought it that day. I still have it almost 2 years later.

Depends on if you include the entire process, or only after I was certain what I wanted. Several years ago, I was ready to get something different and I made a list of all my wants and needs and then started making a list of the cars that checked all those boxes within my price range. I wanted a manual, RWD/AWD and four doors, among other things. I drove a ‘13 WRX and quickly took it off the list because of its crappy shifter and poor (even compared to my ‘05 Mazda 3s interior quality). I thought about trying out an Evo or an E39 M5. At some point, I was highly considering an ‘11 G37 sedan four hours away in Dallas, and noticed that there was an ‘08 E90 M3 for sale down there too (and that prices had fallen somewhat close to my price range, even though it would still be a stretch). I decided that I at least had to know, so a friend and I went down to drive the two cars. I drove the G37 first, and it was a great car. It would have fit my needs perfectly. I liked it enough that I actually put down the $99 to start the transfer process to Tulsa (it was at a CarMax). But then I drove the M3, and it was... a revelation. The sounds it made, the feel of the steering, the vicious acceleration, the beautiful, brutish design... I was hooked. But it was $10k more than I’d initially set my budget for a new car.
I drove home that evening, unsure of what do to. I was raised in a home without a lot of money, in a very frugal way, and this car was going to be over $20k more than I’d spent on my Mazda, and more than anyone in my family had ever spent on a car. My friend was convinced that I was going to get the M3, but I really wasn’t at that point. I have a very hard time parting with money... I went home, and told Mrs. addiction everything about both cars. She must have heard it in my voice and seen it in my eyes. With no hesitation, she encouraged me to get the one I loved; she said that I’d just regret it if I didn’t. Yeah, I love this chick...
The deal was done shortly after that. I could have looked around for a while, but the car was in great shape, with some remaining warranty, in the color I wanted, and at a fair price. Driving it home was surreal, and I still look at it three years later and think, “Damn, that’s my car.” I ended up paying my loan off three years early, so my concern about the money really wasn’t an issue. It’s been so worth it. I love driving it every day, and have had it to the track numerous times and take weekend driving trips just to enjoy the car and fun roads a few times a year. I waited until I was almost 35 to buy my first sports car, which it probably too long, but as they say, good things come to those who wait!

Took me 7 years to save up the cash to buy my Mustang. Granted, I started saving when the 2005 model was announced and wound up with a 2012.

I wanted something obscure so I did my homework, figured out what I wanted and how much I was willing to spend. Then I scoured the internet, narrowed the field to nine cars, and called each one, “This is how much CASH I have; sell it to me now or I’ll call back next month.”
Some dealers turned over their inventory, a few were deleted and others added; but my sales pitch never waivered. After 6 months one dealer asked why I was so persistent. I told him its probably costing you$500/mth to hold onto that car so you’ve lost $3 grand and I’m offering you 5 grand less than you want... sooner or later you’ll relent or maybe you’ll get lucky and find someone willing to give you what you’re asking. Meanwhile the car sits and rots in your showroom, you investment is idle, your cash is tied up, and you’ll probably have to spend more money (replacing belts and seals, change fluids, etc) before you can get it off the floor.
It took 10 months and someone I had called seven times said, “Will you come down here and get this damn car!” I repeated my offer and he agreed. Took a roadtrip with my mechanic, he checked it out, made the dealer change the fluids, rotate the tires, replace the filters, and the car was mine.

It’s way tougher than you would think to find an e46 M3 that hasn’t been hooned into the ground.

Took two years to save, plan, find, and then ended up flying half way across the country, and driving my 2005 Legacy GT Limited 5-speed turbo, black leather on garnet red sedan back.
It was a great car for 7 years after that.

I had my 2013 Civic that I was leasing. I was getting bored of it but still had a year and a half left
Just happened to be browsing the Volvo dealer site and found a 2008 C30. I didn’t know anything about it but the price. No pics color mileage transmission or anything.
So I did the logical thing and drove over an hour the next day to see it. Basically bought the car without ever seeing it. Didnt even test drive it. Traded my lease in half way through to buy a used Volvo.
Purely acted on impulse. Love every second of it.
I did not plan on that happening. When it’s right it’s right.

What did you know beforehand that made you so convinced about the C30?
