I have some fond memories playing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (the first, original one) and High Stakes over TCP/IP with my friend. I don’t even know how games like that worked over dial-up but it somehow did.

I realize now that the Murcielago didn't really look that great until it got that Reventon-style front-end. The original looks flat and a bit boring in comparison.

2001 Murcielago: 580HP
2015 GT350: 526HP
2015 Hellcat: 700HP

Today’s performance cars are batshit insane.

I used to play NFS3 split screen with my friend all the time. I finally built my own PC and just left it at his house. It’s the reason I learned about BNC networking and networks in general, and started me down the road of IT. It’s funny, old computer games made me an IT person. MUD (text based) taught me to program in C, and NFS taught me how to build a local network... Also needed to understand how to set up a SCSI card to attach a CD burner so we could make copies ;)

Hah, I still remember when having a 32X cd burner would be a big deal, although mine was never SCSI (I think most drives were IDE back then).

The graphics were much simpler then, but the gameplay was still tremendously fun. I enjoyed the remake of Hot Pursuit but it didn’t get nearly as much play from me as the original, classic version.

I enjoyed High Stakes since it was simple enough to download custom cars (I had an obsession with Vipers back then) and get some more gameplay out of them. These days, it's all paid-DLC whereas back then it was a community of enthusiasts that would make the car models and characteristics.

High stakes was my favorite of that era. Custom cars and tracks. I was huge into that. To me the series never really was the same since.

It really hasn’t been the same since and the series keeps changing its focus. To be honest, I played the hell out of Underground 2 - it was the first time I had a NFS game where I could tune cars, and I had an Audi TT tuned for 2.5 sec 0-60 times and around 5 sec 0-100 times and it was absolutely nutty. NFS Most Wanted (the first one, I think it was from around 2005-2006) was epic because of the police chases you would have to go through - I think I remember one chase being well over half an hour, but it was tremendously exciting. NFS Shift was their first attempt at making a more serious, Forza/GT-style racer and was also good fun, but that was the last NFS game I really enjoyed.

It's a these modern iterations don't have that option of user-made cars/tracks but I suppose a lot of that comes down to licensing and legal issues.

I really enjoyed both Shift 1 and 2. I played a little bit of Underground 2, but most of the cars weren’t what I wanted. Most Wanted’s police chases lasting as long as they did were what killed my interest in that game. You’d starta race to progress the story, the police show up and 20 minutes after the race concludes you’re still not done. Outside of the Shift iterations the only one I have played of late was the new Hot Pursuit, which was okay. The reboot of the series looks great though.

awesome - pure automobilia porn and nicely done. I really enjoyed Jeremy’s infatuation with the ZR1 in that Audi/Vette comparison and the Romanian best road in the world bit.
