I do until the last click to ensure it is properly applied, I can’t stand when people just pull it and it makes that *clak*clak*clak* sound. Just did it and a friend went insane, telling me I shouldn’t because it isn’t properly applied if I press it. I’ve been doing it for the last 7 years.

Both ways are fine.

No because the clack clack sound it too satisfying to NOT listen to.

I do not, but your friend is nuts.

I have the pull brake on my pickup — there no button to stop the sound, so you pretty much have to love it to own it. Although it sounds more like a duck quack that a chattering of parts.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:23 |

depends, mostly on how lazy im feeling. It doesn’t matter.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:23 |

I press the button, yes.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:23 |

The hand brake lever is just a lever (believe it or not) pulls a cable that engages the rear brakes. The clickety clacky clack is the noise of the teeth in the locking gear ratcheting against eachother . The two functions have no bearing on each other.
That being said, don’t push the button, learn to love the noise. It’s just better for reasons.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:24 |

I can’t stand the clicking sound either.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:25 |

I press it because of mechanical sympathy. I nearly failed an inspection though cause the guy said it has to click 6 times for a pass. I had never heard of that, and every other inspector I’ve spoken to since said it’s not a thing.

Oh, I know how a hand-brake works, I was just curious, he was so adamant about it.

My drivers ed instructor said to only use the button to DISengage the parking brake. He said that if we used it to engage the brake it might not actually be on.

My music is usually so loud, when I pull the thing I don't hear the ratchet click. I'd say 99% of the time I don't press the button when pulling it, but sometimes I do.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:28 |

Fun fact; in South Africa when you’re going through the driving test, if you pull up the hand brake with out depressing the button and make the clacking noise it’s an automatic fail. I always press the button because it’s just a habit at this point.
Also you’re friend is misinformed.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:28 |

That makes no sense.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:28 |

I don’t push the button.

I’ve pulled the hand brake on my Golf using the ratchet method for 14 years and it still works fine.

You have no idea how true that is. Or maybe you do. My 9-year-olds still fight over who gets to push the button.

I push.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:30 |

See, there is no difference in pushing it or not, but JQ’s driving instructor told him the exact opposite, I don’t remember how it is in Brazil, but there is probably some king of rule like that too.
I also press it out of habit

Yeah, I figured as much, but visuals are fun anyways

lol I still do now but with my wife.

It’s a
pawl
, which makes an a-pawl-ing noise when you use it. The noise is awesome. Your friend is nuts.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:31 |

They are, I appreciate the scheme! But I got what I wanted with the post, Bloody says in South Africa, if you don’t press the button, you fail your driving test. JQ said his instructor told him the exact opposite.

They also argue over who gets to put the card in the hotel room door.

I never press the button so it makes the noise every time pretty much.

i have a pull style handbrake so no button for me

The Tribeca has a foot operated one, and the Citroen’s is electric. But on other cars, what do you do?

Pushing the key card in is the best part!!!!
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:40 |

Same in the UK, It counted as a minor though. This was 8 years ago, I don’t know it it’s been updated now lot of cars don’t have a real one.

I’m going on 16 years since getting my license so I have no clue if it’s changed at this point.

![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:53 |

I like to pull the hand brake on the freeway. Clicks and all.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:54 |

I used to always let the teeth “ratchet” when setting the brake, but I have now developed the habit of pressing the button instead.
I heard somewhere that the teeth can get worn down if you let the teeth rub too much, but I’m not convinced of that. I’ve seen the mechanism up close and it’s solid steel with plenty of grease to keep things moving.
No, the real reason why I’ve started using the button to set the brake is: I don’t want the satisfying sound of the ratchet mechanism to be the sole indicator of a securely parked car. Instead, I want the pressure I’m actually applying to the handle to be the thing that makes me confident that it’s not going to roll anywhere.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 18:55 |
|
That’s a healthy habit, keep doing that.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 19:10 |

The person who would pull up a handbrake without pressing the button would probably eat his/her firstborn.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 19:22 |

Grip it and rip it. I don’t bother with the button. Foot operated parking brakes all crank against the pawl with no issues.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 19:50 |
|
In the last two weeks, I only have a button. Prior to that, I just let the ratchet do its job. No. I did not use the button
![]() 10/26/2015 at 19:51 |
|
It doesn’t matter if you press the button, the button is only to release the mechanism and if everything is working properly has no bearing on the operation of the handbrake.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 20:16 |
|
I always pull mine without pushing the button. The noise, I live for the noise.
I’m going to look at the schematics tonight for mine to see if i can upgrade the spring on the ratchet so I can make the clicking louder.
(I also have very noisy hubs on my bicycles. CLACK-CLACK-CLACK-CLACK-CLACK)

If I drive a standard at work (not too often but occasionally) at the Ford dealer I just pull the lever, no button press. That is, if I put the brake on at all. If I’m pulling the car into a lift, I just leave it in first as it’s easier for me to reach in and pop it out of gear if I have to move the car a little. When I’m parking a car it gets first gear and the brake. I’m in and out of so many cars in a day I’m practically immune to common noises like handbrakes and door dingers.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 20:59 |

I actually like the sound. So no button for me.
![]() 10/26/2015 at 21:22 |

I just pull up on it - you can hear the ratcheting noise outside the car. I want the other people to know that I’m a manual transmission connoisseur.
In seriousness, I do just pull it up, i don’t use the button. It doesn’t annoy me though

Yes.

Are you kidding? That’s bonkers.
Nothing says “unfit to operate motor vehicles” more than the sound of the handbrake engaging...
![]() 10/27/2015 at 01:00 |

never let it *clak* and it works just fine, (and it doesn’t wear out the *clakking* mechanism.)
![]() 10/27/2015 at 01:26 |

I never really thought about this. After pondering it for a moment I realized I had no idea what the handbrake on the Mazda5 sounds like, so I tried it without holding in the button. Yup - that’s the noise a handbrake makes. I’ve been driving this car for over three years now and never once heard it. Yeah, it sounds perfectly normal, although like every other little aspect of the car it is obviously not as smooth and refined as on the old E34.

i never push the button when applying it.
