There is an 03 AWD aztek sitting in the ‘Long Hold’ lot of my friend’s we-tote. 45,000 miles, but due to title issues, it’s been sitting there for 8 years. The title issues will be impossible for him to clear up, being in a state that doesnt do Bonded Titles, but mine does. he’s offered me the thing for 450 bucks. It runs, it drives, it’s clean. ideas...

What is a bonded title? A lien against it?

Do it, maybe get him to knock a few quid off, but defo cheap winter beater, I find these ever so cool now, lift it a bit, decent tyres, maybe go a bit post apocalyptic with the styling, BOOM!

Did the Aztek always ride this high? I know the tires are definitely not OEM.
In any case, $450 if you can get it no strings attached (I’d obviously never buy it with a lien or whatever against it) then I’d do it. I don't really like the Aztek very much, my only concern is that you'll probably wind up with a fair amount of idiotic jokes and BB references that it just isn't worth it. I'd probably be able to deal with two or three BB references before just shoving it off a cliff.

A bonded title is a unique mechanism whereby you can say ‘We don’t have a title, we did a search and couldn’t find/contact the people who have a title on it, and we are very sure we own it.’ Then, put down the vehicle’s value in a bond to the state. At that point, they issue you a ‘bonded title.’ If anyone makes a provable claim against the title, the bond is paid up to them. after 3 years with no claim, the bond is returned to you.
Basically, it’s a way to get a title for a vehicle that has a lost title that even the state has no mechanism to rectify. It’s not commonly used, and a little bit of a hassle. Have to sweet talk the county clerk to get them to go through the hoops a little.

A bonded title is a title for which you put up a bond stating/ensuring there is no other legitimate ownership interest, in a similar way to putting up money that way that you won’t flee a court date/whatever. You say “I’m sorry, there is no title I have for this vehicle, but I have this bill of sale and this other paperwork and have attempted to find the title” etc. You post a bond based on the value of the vehicle, which is then held for a number of years - in the mean time they do a search for ownership conflicts and then issue you a title. If somebody comes up in those several years looking for the vehicle, you having posted the bond ensures that you do not just then skedaddle with the vehicle leaving nothing behind.

No, it doesnt ride that high normally. Things were done very wrong to test fit that (spacers in the coils and on the wheels,) but it’s possible to do it ‘right.’ As right as anything about an aztek can be.

At that price, and at that mileage, I’d say it’s a good candidate for flipping if you can get the title situation sorted.

The bonded title process in NC isn’t too painful. Don’t know about your state. I only know because by the time I tried to locate the title for my Rover it had been some thirty years since my dad’s cousin had bought the thing, and his searches of paperwork and searches of WI records (which they don’t keep that long) came up empty.

Title Washing is a major issue here, so bonded titles take significant documentation.

There is a tent, I do not know about the other bits. I’ll have to take a look at it next time I am at his lot.

I’d have to swap back on the OEM wheels, black the hell out of the body cladding, wax and polish it, clean the interior, and put some trophies around it. Call it my Concours Aztek.
Bowling trophies, not car trophies.

Nah, it’s a similar car that we did this to a few years back for laughs, then immediately swapped it back to regular wheels, tires, and removed the spring spacers. Though, now that they are so cheap and i have access to cheap aggressive tires, could actually figure out how to do it proper.

No, he bought the complete dealership as an auction 5 years after a ‘suspicious fire’ and the owner of the place was arrested for drug distribution. This vehicle was sitting in the back with no documentation, no tags, etc. It was also suspected of having a seized engine. An aztek without a title and suspected seized engine wasn’t worth the trouble. I was futzing with it one day, and found the issue was a seized starter. Once the starts was dropped, the engine turned. I replaced the fluids, put on a charged battery, and used a ‘going bad’ starter from an alero to crank it. Fired up.
Now, since there is no paper title, and the vehicle was out of state, it’s going to be a fair bit of work to title it. The only thing going is there IS a mechanics lien on it from the dealership, pre purchase. The vehicle was auctioned once and didnt sell. I may be able to use the mechanics lien and auction notice to get a title for it, after sending a certified letter to the old owners, in MY state. In the we-tote’s state, that wont work. I’m going to send the letter and see if they respond. According to lexis nexis though, they haven’t lived at that address in years.

The tent is i there, but the tires that it had (factory) are dryrotted. it’s honestly going to need a few hundred in brakes, hoses, belts, etc before it’s road worthy. The tent may be in similar condition.

I’m in tennessee. The car doesn’t have the tires and wheels and adapters on it now, that was just for laughs. Though I might fabricate something similar up for it and build a proper lift If I DO get it (the suspension on that thing is... unique and may be difficult to lift.)
I’ve sent a registered letter to the previous owners of file, if they dont respond, then I’ll be able to get my bonded title. :P if that is the case, I will most likeley keep it.

Okay. Let me know otherwise though. It is perfect for what I need it for. I have family in Alabama, I can get them to pick it up for me, until I can get there and get it back to CA... I like the way that set up looks, by the way.
