I’ve been on this thing recently of looking at the Trans-Am and Rally Audi’s of the 70’s/80’s and thinking “Yes, I need me some of that!”

In my head, they’re less expensive E30s. Is this true? Are they any good? Project car?

1. A 1980s Audi is roughly the polar opposite of the E30 dynamically. Mostly FWD, engine hanging out in front of the axle, non-independent suspension (unless you go quattro).

2. They’re ok, I guess. Probably not that different from a Camry for the most part.

My dad had a 5000. It, along side his R107, were the only foreign cars his parents liked. He said it was very fun to drive and the only bad part was expensive parts (this was before the internet made everything automotive so cheap). I’d say go for it, it might be a lot of fun.

Or you could buy my 924 for $2000 and have a RWD, liftback, coupe version of the I4 version (which was an engine only available in Europe). I kid, that thing is a hot mess.

Expect parts and service to be typical Euro-car expensive, just like the BMW. Expect there to be the odd electrical gremlin that you’ll have to track down. They’re decent cars to drive and have decent fuel economy. And expect it to be less reliable and durable than most cars made in the past 10 years.
