So there I was, walking around a Target parking lot (again), and I see it. The classiest rebadged Nissan there has ever been. The 1998 Mercury Villager Nautica Editon.

Kinja'd!!!

What a beast. Producing 151 horsepower from it’s 3.0 liter V6, the Villager was the epitome of late 90’s upper-middle class minivans. And if you had the Nautica, you DEFINITELY made it.

I actually wouldn’t mind having a Villager. Because it was fitted with a popular Nissan engine, there is a wide aftermarket for performance modifications. And honestly, who wouldn’t want a turbo van?

All I know is, THIS is the most 90’s thing. A Nautica badged minivan. If only it had a little turquoise and pink trim instead of blue/yellow.

It’d basically be the kids section at JC Penney in 2004

Wait, 3.0, 150 hp, and it’s turbocharged? Holy shit Nissan, you can do better than that.

Oh no, I should preface that it isn’t turbocharged, but a turbo would cause significant improvements to engine performance, especially in this van. Upon review, I can see why this is confusing.

I know there are turbo kits for the Maxima with the same 3.0 V6, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to work in the Villager/Quest.

But 151 horsepower isn’t too terrible for 1998. I mean, it’s not good. But it isn’t bad either.

Oh, Chrysler has made turbocharged minivans before, and I think the Previa was supercharged, so the precedence was there. Even if it wasn’t turbocharged, 150 hp for a 3.0 V6 was on the lower end in 1998. Not terrible, but definitely on the low end. The Mitsubishi 2.5 and 3.0 V6s used in some Chryslers had 160 and 200 ish hp, and the Chrysler 3.3 int he minivans was at 162 hp in ‘94. Not terrible for NA, but I thought it was turbocharged and it is terrible for a forced induction engine.

Sometimes I’ll see a Grand Caravan R/T on the street, and I’ll nearly orgasm all over the place.
